Greetings. I’m a Chicago sports fan. I can’t help it, it’s in my DNA. Born and raised in the city and living in the metro area for all of my 37 years, I’ve learned to love flinty ownership, Napoleanic-era offensive strategies, centuries of tradition- because it has been centuries since anyone won anything, and mustaches- one can’t help but want to follow these teams. Or maybe it’s the colorful uniforms that haven’t changed significantly in 60 years or more…
One great thing though, is that one of these teams always manages to provide excitement for a few years every decade or so, and this means that there is always something to do while drinking beer and eating copious amounts of heart-attack inducing meat products- whether in the parking lot of the ball park, or at home.
As you can see, being a Chicago sports fan takes dedication, intestinal fortitude, and an ungodly amount of patience. Consequently, these are also qualities that will help you deal with adversity. So, in a way, I guess you can say that growing up a sports fan in Chicago has prepared me to face all challenges in life!
So, that’s a little bit about me and how I feel about my teams. Despite their faults, I love them. They are like family, well, like a cousin at least: always bumming money off me and never paying it back, causing me no end of frustration with their constant failings, and when they have a little success- they make you stay out all night drinking and missing work the next day…
