<intro>
Two players from CSKA Moscow have been suspended for failing a doping test that they submitted on November 3 of this year.

The players in question, Sergei Ignashevich and Aleksei Berezutsky, have not yet commented on the ban but the club have stated that the two were given a cold medicine while they were playing for the national team at the world cup qualifiers. The banned substance has not been made public by Uefa, the governing body in Europe, and the club insist that although the substance in question is on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list of 'S6 stimulants' it is not on Uefa's banned list. They also state that their medical staff failed to disclose the medication in a list provided to Uefa staff prior to the game against Manchester United at Old Trafford and that it was a just a clerical error on their part.

There is to be further discussion on the case on December 17, which is just one day before the draw for the final 16 teams in the Champions League. Why is this significant? Well, according to Part 12 of Uefa's disciplinary regulations "if more than one player from the same team is charged with a doping offense in relation to a prohibited substance or methods, the team in question may be disqualified from the competition in progress and/or future competition." On Tuesday December 8 CSKA Moscow beat Besitkas of Turkey to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League. But the governing body have already stated that the club will not be thrown out of the tournament.

My question is, if these two players in question have taken illegal substances and are convicted of doing the same then why should the club not be banned? It is yet another slap in the face to fans of the game. France qualify for the World Cup by cheating their way through and a team that has two players taking illegal substances qualifies for one of the most prestigous tournaments in the game. What is the point in having regulations if they are never going to be brought into use. I know that we should all wait for the outcome of further testing and not jump to conclusion but on that same vain should the governing body not do the same and refrain from issueing a statement declaring that CSKA Moscow will not be banned. Please feel free to comment on this article.
</intro>

    <intro>
So David Beckham after the L.A. Galaxy are done in the MLS Playoffs is heading back to Italy to join AC MILAN once again on loan from the Galaxy as he attempts to try and stay fit and hopefully make Fabio Capello's squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The thing that is interesting about this move is that the fans of the Galaxy still think that he is leaving because he is tired of Landon Donovan and the team and wants to buy out of his contract, the thing that he really wants to do is keep playing after the MLS season is done for he can stay in game shape. With the 2010 FIFA World Cup being in June 2010 Beckham knows that it is only a couple of months till England Manager, Fabio Capello sets his squad for the World Cup next year. Beckham knows that he is going to have to do anything he can for he can see some playing time next year in South Africa, because if he doesn't go to Italy and play with AC MILAN there is a chance that Beckham makes the World Cup team but would not see the pitch at all. David Beckham has said it before that his intentions of playing of AC MILAN are for he can play for his country England in yet another World Cup and not just because he wants to leave the Galaxy.

It is interesting to see that when he first came back from Milan that most of the fans were treating him with hate because to them he didn't show any commitment to the team, which is really interesting because why didn't everyone treat Landon Donovan that way when he went on loan to the German Club Bayern Munich. What makes it interesting is that when Beckham came back the Galaxy were on a winning streak and when he got put back into the lineup they started playing better and wounded up earning the number one spot in the Western Conference of the MLS but ended up short when they lost to Real Salt Lake in a shootout where they lost 5-4 in a penalty shootout.

In perspective, Beckham shouldn't be criticized for wanting to do what he can in order for he can help his country's in their pursuit for the FIFA World Cup Title. If you were to ask any other player if what would they do if they were in Beckham's situation most of them would tell you that they would the exact same thing because to most of the professional soccer players, playing for your country is the most important thing because it means that they are representing all the people of their country.
</intro>

    <intro>
The Seattle Sounders FC should become the model for all future expansion teams in any sport. Built to hit the ground running they premiered with a home pitch win over the NY Red Bulls and have continued on a march to the playoffs. Along the way they grabbed the US Open Cup Lamar Hunt trophy to decorate the mantle in their new home at Qwest Field. One of their owners is Drew Carey who hosts TV’s The Price is Right. On that show you’re supposed to know the value of things and he certainly understood that the Sounders FC were money in the bank. However, even he is stunned at their rapid rate of return.

Along with being one of the most exciting expansion teams to come along in any sport, they have proven their level of success by winning the US Open Cup. The trophy says they are the best side in the US and they may be able to strengthen that argument by the time their MLS campaign ends. More importantly, the Cup may have incubated a rivalry between the Sounders and DC United that will allow them to have a side to despise until the Portland Timbers move up to MLS status in 2011.

DC United where their opponents and hosts for the US Open Cup and having to play the match in DC started the acrimony that the sides feel for each other. The Sounders wanted the match to be played in Seattle. Their opening round matches in the Northwest had drawn the rabid support they have established as they prove Americans will turn out to watch soccer.

However, their early round US Open Cup matches had been played at the Starfire Complex at Tukwila, WA. Tucked beside the Green River the facility is small and allows fans the opportunity to get closer to the pitch than possible at Qwest. While homey, the Starfire was not appropriate for the Cup final since attendance could be tripled at Qwest. Unfortunately, the match was played on September 4 and the Seahawks were closing out their preseason with their usual pasting of the Oakland Raiders on September 6. The grounds crew needed more time to prepare the field, so the folks who honor Lamar Hunt awarded the home pitch to DC. Adrian Hanauer, co-owner and GM of the Sounders, wanted the match moved to September 3, but the powers to be proved inflexible, so off to or nations Capitol as Mr. Schmid goes to Washington.

The Emerald City Supporters took advantage of their frequent flyer miles as they helped to pad the attendance at DC. The United folks should have been grateful since earlier Cup matches had drawn about as much as a showdown between the Nationals and the Padres. Instead, they bad mouthed the Sounders and their fans to the point where the lathered up wearers of rave green beat them for the US Open Cup and hung around to give them another whipping for the MLS regular season.

With two victories in two meetings the rivalry is a bit one sided and in favor of the new kids on the block. Next time DC United may want to be the road side and spare their fans the sight of their beating.
<intro>
A heartbreaking loss in a game that should've been won by the visiting squad.

They said it couldn't be done.

They said that this American team would play more like they did in the Gold Cup than in the Confederation Cup.

They said that the Mexicans at home, in the Azteca, in front of 105,000 fans would be too much.

And they were right.

But they weren't right by much. No. They were only as right as a miracle shot by Castro. They were only as right by the length of a couple of inches. But that's football, isn't it?

The Americans came out swinging. So much of coach Bradley's style was thrown out of the window to start the game. America is typically a defense / counter team. It's frustrating to watch at times, but they've stayed that course for some time now.

But Bradley, seeing as the conditions in Azteca wouldn't be totally ideal for such a strategy decided to push pace early - a ploy that the Mexicans hadn't seen from this squad yet. Davies caught an inbound pass in the ninth minute to put the Americans up 1-0. Mexico was reeling - and Ochoa (who tries to look 'pretty' on game days) was baffled.

But then what they said would happen...did happen. Ochoa pulled his headband tight around his locks and didn't allow another goal. Castro took an amazing shot from well outside the penalty box and pushed a ball through the top of the goal. No fault to Tim Howard from the view of the spectator. The shot was amazing and utterly brilliant. There was no defense for a strike like that.

And it wasn't until Sabah was brought into the game late that Mexico broke the 1-1 tie and put themselves up for good to win by the score of 2-1.

But this game was ours for the taking. There will be questions of why Brian Ching was left for so long while Altidore rode the bench. Many American supporters would've rather seen Altidore come in during the double switch and left Holden on the bench until later.

And the refereeing was downright horrible. This writer was aghast that the Americans compiled the yellow cards so quickly while referee Moreno felt obliged to let the home squad play on in plays that deserved a stoppage.

This game was thrilling to watch, and unbearable all at the same time. But at least America stays in second place behind CR with 10 points while the Mexicans rose to third with 9.
</intro>

    <intro>

For most of you, you may be wondering what Association football is. In the back of your mind you may be thinking that it is football as we know in the United States, and that everyone knows each other, therefore they are associates. Yeah, that’s it, that’s the ticket.

In addition, yes, I know that is the most ridiculous thing you have ever heard and I agree with you. However, for those of you who truly do not know what association football is, it is considered to be the most popular sport in the world, otherwise more commonly known as soccer, or football, as it is known everywhere in the world except here in the United States where we have our own brand of football.

Which by the way, I still believe to be a much more exciting and interesting sport, but I will not get into that now, that is a whole different article.

Association football is the most popular brand of football throughout the world.

The rules of football were originated in England by the Football Association in 1863, and the name association football was originally choosen to distinguish the game from the other forms of football played at the time, specifically rugby football.

The term soccer originated in England, in the 1880s as a slang word for "association".

Today the sport is widely known as football in countries where it is the most popular football game. In countries where other games are more popular, the sport is more commonly referred to as soccer, most notably in the United States and Canada where both countries play what we shall call American football.

The modern game of soccer, which I will call it from here on out to avoid any confusion, was systematized in England following the formation of The Football Association. Its Laws of the Game created the foundations for the way soccer is played today throughout the world.

The Laws of the Game are currently determined by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). The IFAB was formed in 1886 after a meeting in Manchester England of The Football Association, the Scottish Football Association, the Football Association of Wales, and the Irish Football Association. Well that really clears up the “Association” title.

The world's oldest soccer competition is the FA Cup, and has been challenged by English teams since 1872. The first official international football match between two different countries took place in 1872 between Scotland and England in Glasgow.

There are seventeen laws in the official soccer Laws of the Game.

The same Laws are designed to apply to all levels of soccer, although there have been alterations for special groups such as children, seniors and women. The laws are often laid out in broad terms, which allow flexibility in the rules depending on the nature of the game. Hmm, sounds more like a guideline then an actual set of rules to me.

In addition to the seventeen laws, there are many IFAB decisions and other directives that contribute to the regulations of soccer. The Laws of the Game are officially published by the FIFA. However, the International Football Association Board, not the FIFA itself, maintains them.

The most complex of the Laws of the Game is offsides. The offside law limits the ability of attacking players to remain forward of the ball and closer to the opponent's goal line, while the second-to-last defending player, which can include the goalkeeper, and the half-way line on the pitch.

By the way, the “pitch” is not someone throwing the ball, which is not allowed in soccer. The only player in soccer that is allowed to use his hands, touch the ball, and throw the ball is the goalkeeper. The “pitch” is what the field of play is called in soccer. Crazy Brits, why don’t they just call it a field?

Football, association football, laws of the game, pitch, why can’t they just say soccer, rules, and field? I’m so confused!

</intro>

    <intro>
We all know that Christiano Ronaldo has left to what could be now the team to beat......Real Madrid.I am a huge Ronaldo fan and i hope he does well there but thats beside the point.His old team, Manchester United said that it was time for Ronaldo to leave the team and it was a big loss but you have to move on from those things.So how do they move on????????They get 3 new players one of them being Michael Owens who is not at the top of his game right now but many say it was because of his injury that he had most of last year.And to top it off he also gets number 7.Lets see how well Man Utd. can perform without there great portugese superstar and Carlitos Tevez.
News and people</intro>

    <intro>
U.S. Soccer Comes of Age on the National Stage

The week before no one would have thought we had a chance. The unlikely and remarkable path we took to the game is now well known. On the verge of being eliminated from the Confederations Cups group stage, we needed a 3-0 victory over Egypt and we needed Italy to loose 3-0 to Brazil. Unlikely as it was, that was exactly what happened. More unlikely still was our 2-0 victory over Spain in the semi-final. With that, suddenly and unexpectedly, the U.S. Men’s National Team found itself thrust into the Confederations Cup final against Brazil.

On any other occasion you’d have been quick to describe our chances using a combination of the words “snowball” and “hell.” The U.S. had only beaten Brazil once ever, back in 1998. We’ve never before made it to the final of anything this big on an international level. Yet here we were, faced off against Brazil. Brazil, 5-time World Cup winner, defending Confederations Cup champions. Brazil, powerhouse of all Football nations, the raw talent pool from which the elite European leagues recruit their best players. They’d made us look like the provincial “soccer” novices the rest of the world sees us as only a few days earlier.

But going into the game you heard less of the “lucky to even get to play such a team” talk we heard before the Spain match. Indeed the players lined up on the pitch for national anthems even looked different. Not scared or blank faced as they had before Spain. Instead they were confident, all business. Even our opponents seemed to reflect the change in U.S. posture. Whereas Spain seemed jaded, disinterested, their minds already on the final, Brazil looked cagey, and wiry. Robinho in particular, looked like Bruce Lee about to fight ten men. Their body language was clear: the U.S. were not to be underestimated. Not this team.

As the game began the U.S. strategy of tight defense complimented by quick, breakaway counterattacked seemed to still be well intact. Brazils attacks on goal were met with the same stiff resistance Spain’s had been. The tight defensive power-trio of center backs Onyewu and DeMerit, and goalkeeper Tim Howard held strong. Ten minutes in a U.S. counter attack by Johnathon Spector lead to a cross to Clint Dempsey. True to his form against Spain, Dempsey lobbed the ball in past Brazil keeper Julio Caesar and the U.S. were one up.

Brazil instantly changed gears, put the pedal to the gas and turned up the speed on attacking. But it was clear they were rattled. Another 1st half goal from Landon Donovan and they were even more unsettled. Nothing they did seemed to go right and you could see questions forming on the faces of this superstar squad filled with expensive players like Robinho and Kaka. Wasn’t this supposed to be kind of easy? Has the U.S. suddenly risen up from mediocrity to assume its position as a football power? Were the days of U.S. early eliminations and being “lucky to even play such a team” finally over? As the first half closed we were ahead 2-0. It seemed to good to be true.

Sadly, it was. One minute into the second half Brazilian striker Fabiano executed a brilliant turn and rocketed a strike straight past Tim Howard and firmly into the back of the net. Over the next 45 minutes Brazil got down to the business of showing us why they are Brazil. Taking control of the midfield, getting the lion’s share of possession, they began shutting down our attacks before they could get started. Another goal for Fabiano and suddenly both teams were back to doing what they normally did in such matches: the Brazilians dancing, passing and mesmerizing, the Americans standing somewhat awestruck before them, at times looking unsure of what to do. A few minutes before the final whistle Brazilian captain Lucio made it 3-2, restoring the football status quo.

Brazil not only won the match and the cup. They showed us what separates a good national side from a great one by coming back from being 2 down in the first half and winning the game in the Brazilian manner: beautifully.

The U.S. were left stunned and saddened. Some were even in tears as they collected their second place trophies and bronze honorable mention statues, while the Brazilians sambaed through their victory lap. In the end, what had it all changed?

Well, a lot actually. The U.S. stood toe to toe with 2 of the best teams in the world. We shut them both out for a combined total of 2 hours and 15 minutes of playtime. Our 2-0 first half against Brazil put to bed much of the talk of our Spain victory being a fluke. We made it to our first FIFA international final and for a few days and a few hours we were serious contenders.

Will we be again, next summer in the 2010 World Cup? Something in the tears of Clint Dempsey as he collected his 2nd place and honorable mention trophies and in the jutting jaw and forced camera smile of Tim Howard as he collected his, tells me that we will be. These were clearly the faces of men who no longer took defeat lightly. Never mind being “lucky to play such teams.” The U.S. Men’s National Team has come of age, and looks to want only one thing: to win.
<intro>
Team U.S.A. Pulls Off Surprise Confederations Cup Upset

The fact that we got there in the first place was considered a fluke. Considering dismal performances against Brazil and Italy last week and the fact that we only just recovered our form against an inconsistent Egypt. But last night in South Africa the U.S.A. men’s national soccer team pulled off one of the great upsets of the modern soccer era, shutting out Spain, the number one ranked team in the world. In the world!

Having been made to look like the proverbial Keystone Cops the rest of the football world regards us with our “Soccer,” against Brazil, expectations for Team U.S.A. were decidedly low. Even as the pregame national anthems were played, Spain looked all business and the U.S. team looked, well, scared. And then the game began.

From the start Spain were the dominant team in midfield. Controlling the ball they set up attacks kept us on the defensive and basically did a pretty convincing job of looking like the number one team in the world. But the U.S. dug in its heels and defensively managed to do just about everything that was required of them. They didn’t concede a point and broke up every early Spanish attack inside the box. They even looked dangerous early on with a spectacular bicycle kick from Charlie Davies going just a few yards wide.

Any Spanish attack that did manage to get through was ably handled by U.S. keeper Tim Howard. And then somewhere around the 25th minute something totally unexpected happened. The U.S.A. scored a goal. Jose Altidore beat Spanish keeper Iker Casillas with a muscular strike that put the ball firmly in the back of the net. With that the U.S were ahead. And we stayed ahead for the rest of the match. With officials seeming to favor Spain at every turn, first half yellow cards were given to Landon Donovan and Jose Altidore (for removing his shirt to celebrate his goal). And yet despite this, none of the obvious mistakes made against Brazil last week were evident.

The U.S.A., the un-football nation of all nations, fought Spain, number one ranked team in the world and current European Champions, to a standstill. The U.S. defended doggedly against a relentless Spanish attack. Scuttling shot after shot by two of the world’s finest strikers: Fernando Torres and David Villa. It just may be possible to say that defensively, the U.S. did not make a single misstep. Center backs Oguchi Onyewu and Jay Demerit managed to break up most Spanish attacks that were launched inside the box. Tim Howard who surely deserves to be the U.S.A.’s man of the match handled those that did manage to break through competently and confidently.

Spain closed out the first half without any real credible threats on goal. It was Torres who came closest to equalizing just before the half, cutting in and around defenders only to have his shot deflected by Howard.

Spain emerged in the second half looking revitalized and dangerous. Everyone expected them to quickly equalize and probably gain the lead not too long after that. But they didn’t. They dominated the midfield and continued to launch attack after attack, basically laying siege to our goal. But none of them got through. Around the hour mark a sloppy U.S. throw in gave David Villa another chance to fire a laser from distance that beat Howard but was just a yard or so wide. Five minutes later Howard stopped another Villa launched rocket from hell. Around the world fans, journalists and pundits, myself included, patiently waited for the inevitable to happen. But it didn’t.

Then in the 73rd minute lightning struck twice. Donovan fired a cross across the Spanish goal, which was sent in from a tricky angle at close range by Dempsey, narrowly beating Sergio Ramos and keeper Casillas. In spite of consistently looking more dangerous and officials who seemed to favor them at every turn, Spain were suddenly down 2-nil.

At the 80th minute Xavi Alonso fired a shot, straight at Howard, that was deflected. In the 83rd there was another chance for Altidore that was quickly ruled offside. Spain, were awarded corner kick after corner kick, dominated possession and had almost three times as many shots on goal as we did. Yet somehow they failed to capitalize on any of it. In the 86th minute Michael Bradley was red carded for a late tackle and the U.S. were reduced to 10 men. Spain continued to play in their usual dynamic fashion yet by this point the looks on their faces could only be described as forlorn. In the 89th minute the officials finally called one in favor of the U.S., as Pique was yellow carded for elbowing Landon Donovan.

After one more minute of normal play and three minutes of penalty time, Spain’s fifteen game unbeaten streak, going back to 2006, was over. The U.S. men’s national team had triumphed and advanced to the final, marking the first time in FIFA history that a U.S. men’s national team had advanced to the final of anything. Spain, the world and perhaps the U.S. team itself, were stunned.

Was it a fluke or a coming of age? Perhaps we’ll find out Sunday when they face the winner of Thursday’s game between host nation South Africa and Brazil.
<intro>

Back in 1980, the United States Olympic hockey team beat the worlds best hockey team against all odds on there way to the gold medal. Here it is 2009, almost thirty years later and another United States team has surpassed all odds to defeat the best team in the world.

The U.S. soccer team defeated almighty Spain 2-0 to advance to the Confederations Cup. Instead of the Miracle on Ice, this time we have the Miracle on Turf!

Just as in 1980, the world’s jaws have dropped and they are stunned in disbelief. Soccer fans of the world will certainly take acknowledgement of this feat.

What is even more amazing is that the Americans were in quicksand and sinking fast while on the brink of elimination last weekend. They are the first team to beat Spain since Romania did so back in 2006. It is also the first Men’s FIFA final appearance in 93 years.

However, on this day, fortunes were with the Americans once again as goals by Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey led the U.S. team to an upset of the #1 soccer team in the world.

“It goes to show what hard work and commitment to each other can bring,” said U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard, who made eight saves. “Sometimes futball is a funny thing.”

Howard thwarted Spain with a series of saves during the second half.

“The only thing that was going to get us through this game was sticking together, working hard and we did that,” he said. “We rode our luck at times, they were a great team, they pushed us all the way to the limit but we took our chances well.”

Even Spain’s 15-game winning streak did not intimidate the Americans. Winning streaks do not automatically score goals.

Soccer, which is the worlds most popular sport, except here in America, and now the irony of it all, the American soccer team will march with their heads held high into Sunday’s championship game in Johannesburg against either home team South Africa or five-time World Cup winner Brazil.

U.S. coach Bob Bradley had his team ready to play the game at a fast pace and they did not allow the talented Spanish team any room to create their multiple passing moves. The American team gave them no space on the field to work their magic. They crowded the middle of the field and Spain just could not find a way around it.

All of a sudden, this Spanish team did not look like the team that utterly dominated when they won last year’s European Championship, and then continue to go unbeaten into this Confederations Cup tournament.

This was an elimination game for the U.S. and they had nothing to lose, so they played the match on their terms with their determination and the Spaniards just never got into the flow of the game.

This game is another miracle for an American sports team. No one in the world expected them to win, or thought they even had a slight chance to do so. However, just as the 1980 U.S. hockey team fought through adversity and shocked the world with their stunning victory over the Russians, the American soccer team more then matched the miracle with its own stunning victory over the Spaniards, the best team in the world.

The only thing missing was Al Michaels screaming “Do You Believe in Miracles” as the clock ran out.
</intro>

Soccer Offers More Options For Sports Fans

Beyonce. Lasagna. Heineken. Basketball. University of Miami football. Jordan. Oreo McFlurry with hot fudge. The Usual Suspects. I have my favorites.

I prefer certain meals, beverages, movies, teams, players, and sports. And, at first glance, I find some women more exciting than others. But I can also appreciate the variety of these luxuries. Give me steak and potatoes, Crown and Coke, football, the Miami Heat, Marino, some flan, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and I am still a happy camper. I would be even happier if you added Shakira or Britney. Actually, options and variety are the only things that keep us sane. Otherwise, we could all be stuck enduring a 250 game, year-long baseball season. Every year. Always.

Now, it is no secret that the average American sports fan has no interest in soccer, or, as I prefer to call it, futbol. Pele. World Cup ’94. Major League Soccer. David Beckham. There have been many failed attempts in the United States to incite a national interest in the most popular game in the world. The M.L.S. has been around for a while now but I cannot name more than 4 or 5 teams.

We Americans already have our sports. We have grown up following our favorite teams and players. We all remember walking into the stadium and staring at the field, court, diamond for the first time. We have played all of these sports at one time or another. Most of us have even played futbol before. Football, basketball, and baseball dominate the sports landscape. The calendar year contains the three professional sports leagues and the NCAA which overlap in a comfortable cycle that has been ingrained in our conscience like the days of the week. I completely understand and appreciate this.

However, as sports fans, we should take time to at least give the most popular sport in the world a chance to entertain.

I am not here to try to convince anyone to become a futbol fan. I actually hope average fans continue to reject the sport, deny the artistry of the ultimate team game, ignore the skill, stamina, and athleticism it takes to complete a 90 minute, non-stop test of wills where the final score is as accurate as our sports when measuring which team played better that day (I understand tie games are unfulfilling and I will get to that later). Whether you are a fan of futbol or not is as meaningful to me as whether you are a football, basketball, baseball, Michael Jackson, Madonna, or grilled-cheese sandwich fan. It does not matter. And it certainly does not matter to the rest of the world. The international powers are content knowing that America has no interest in becoming a soccer nation, since they surely realize we have the athletes to eventually dominate the world.

No, I am here only to introduce to the non-believers a game that I, along with a couple billion others, know to be a beautiful game, the Beautiful Game: Futbol.

You remember the girl in your class with the glasses, braces, and pigtails who did not speak English? The one you never paid any attention to except maybe to make fun of her? She is now a knockout beauty working as a personal trainer, and, best of all, still does not speak English. Luckily, you will not need to learn another language. I will translate.

The pitch, passing lanes, slide tackles, 1-2s, shape, draws, pace, form, direct kicks, counter-attacks, corner kicks, yellow cards, indirect kicks, injury time, advantage, red cards, tables, groups, competitions, through passes, chip shots, penalty kicks. Yes, futbol has a lot of action and the professional leagues have plenty of structure.

The English Premiere League, for example, has twenty teams. These teams play against each other two times a season, one at home and one away. Teams receive 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss. The team with the most points after 38 matches wins the league championship. No playoffs. While I am not sure whether or not I like this method of determining a champion, I am sure I like the fact that it is different. The season is literally a race. Every match is equally important.

And 1st place is not the only finish that matters.

The BOTTOM 4 teams are sent to a lower division league for the following season, or relegated, while the top 4 teams of this lower division league are sent up to the Premiere League for the following season, or promoted. The same system is in place for the Spanish Primera, German Bundesliga, and Italian Serie A (except that Germany has 18 teams in its top league). These four leagues contain the best teams and players in the world.

The TOP few teams at the end of the season automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the following year. The Champions League consists of the top teams in Europe. Every country gets at least 1 automatic birth, with the more powerful countries receiving between 2 to 3 automatic births. You may have seen this league on ESPN. I know you have at least heard of it. Teams are organized in 8 groups of 4 teams. Each team plays the other 3 teams twice, once at home and once away. Points are awarded in the same fashion as the country leagues and the top two teams from each group advance to the Round of 16. This round is similar to the NCAA’s Sweet 16 in that it is now a single-elimination format. The difference is that the teams play two games against each other, once at home and once away, or ‘aggregate’. The team with the most goals after the two games advances. As I mentioned before, ties are never a satisfying result for a game; however, since points add up over the course of a season or tournament, 1 point can be very important to a team’s success. Although it is more of a tournament than a league, the Champions League is played out over several months and is one of the most competitive competitions in all of sports.

Just think of 3 more NFLs, NBAs, or MLBs, where the best teams in the 4 leagues never play against each other during the regular season but are invited to participate in a meaningful league the following year.

Asia, Africa, and the Americas have similar club leagues and champions leagues.

In addition to their club teams, players around the world compete for their country teams throughout the year. These competitions can be found in the form of a ‘friendly’, an exhibition, but there are other games such as World Cup qualifiers and European Cup qualifiers. The World Cup being the most-watched event in the world and taking place every four years. The European Cup also takes place every four years. This means every two years futbol has an important international competition that is four years in the making.

Sure, there are Basketball World Championships and World Baseball Classics, but who will attempt to make us laugh by saying that they really follow those tournaments or care who wins? We Americans could care less about Cups or competitions. Our main concern is the regular season, followed by the playoffs.

As far as the actual game-play itself, all you need to do is watch a couple games and you can see what takes place on the field, a.k.a. the pitch. Any true sports fan can appreciate the athletic ability on display. When you consider the way the ball is possessed, controlled, and taken away from one player to another, one team to another, you cannot help but be impressed by the fact that it is against the rules to use your hands.

The best futbol players can control the soccer ball with their feet with the same grace and skill as a point guard who controls the basketball with his hands. And since the best defenders in the world can steal or intercept the ball with the same ease as Ed Reed, futbol players must be able to pass the ball with deft touch and accuracy at all times.

Futbol players are some of the best athletes in the world. Their footwork alone makes them candidates to be great at other sports. Ask Steve Nash, 2-time NBA MVP, who credits his amazing footwork on the hardwood to his playing futbol while growing up in Canada.

But there is hardly any scoring. That is so boring. Isn’t it? I do not think so. I rarely find myself staring at the scoreboard during a game. Only in basketball do you see points constantly being scored. Watch a full futbol game. If you pay close enough attention, and are lucky enough to get a goal, you may get the feeling that everything that happened before that goal directly led to that goal being scored. Like a running team in football, after a few 4, 5, 6 yard runs, you can sense a big 20-25 yd run is about to break out. Or as in baseball, big innings usually come after 1 or 2 times around the batting order. There is a process of taking pitches, becoming familiar with the pitcher’s style, making him work, and before you know it, the wheels are turning.

Why am I writing about the similarities? The beauty of futbol is the differences from our mainstream sports. From the lack of high-scoring games to the structure of the professional leagues, futbol has its own well-established identity. Just as I am amused that the rest of the world has not fully accepted football, I am equally as amused by the fact that America has not made space for futbol on its sports landscape. By ‘amused’, I mean I ‘could care less’.

I could care less because with technology today, I can watch Fox Soccer Channel, GOL-TV, and Setanta channel, all of which show games from the four top country leagues mentioned earlier. These games are in addition the games already being shown on basic cable. Also, next season ESPN will televise Spanish Primera League games. We futbol fans do not need the sport to become more popular. As it stands, there is enough interest that a casual fan can watch games from overseas and follow teams like Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and A.C Milan (You think you’re team has a loyal, passionate fan base? Go to youtube right now and look up “world’s biggest gang fight”. You should see a group of red-clad individuals against a similar group of blue-clad individuals. Now tell me why they are fighting.) and players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Frank Ribery, Kaka, and Robinho (While there are plenty of American athletes considered to be world-famous, and for good reason, these athletes truly are world-famous).

I am American. I will never understand what is attractive about a women’s hairy armpit, I will never knowingly eat dog, and I doubt I will ever pierce my lips together; however, I will watch a futbol game when the opportunity presents itself. As a fan of sports, I will be grateful that the rest of the world preserves this game. And I will be most thankful that the sports gods offer another option, another taste to enjoy: The Beautiful Game
