<intro>
Early reports are that Super Bowl XLIV broke a TV ratings record from 1983. That was held by the final episode of M*A*S*H, "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen". M*A*S*H replaced Dallas with "Who shot J.R.?" (1980) which passed the final for Roots (1977). Those shows were at the top spot for about three years each, while M*A*S*H was there for nearly 27 years.

The Super Bowl was also the first U.S. sporting event to surpass 100 million viewers. The first time the Super Bowl passed 90 million viewers was Super Bowl XX when the Bears easily beat the New England Patriots. Actually it seems amazing that game was able to hold viewers since the result was not in question by halftime. The ratings dipped below 90 million for the next few Super Bowls, but bounced back with the Dallas wins in the 90's and the Denver win over Green Bay. When Pittsburgh beat Seattle in Super Bowl XL, the ratings again broke the 90 million mark and have been on a steady climb ever since.

    <intro>
It is like that old Aesop's Fable about the dog and the bone. Or maybe, it was a colt and a bone. And this time, the bone that the colt had was a perfect season. But as the colt stood on that bridge at 14-0, he looked in the reflection and saw a colt with another bone. The colt thought the other bone looked better, dropped the bone he had, and wound up with nothing.

Two teams ended the season at 16-3, but there is no doubt that the New Orleans Saints were the better team. The Colts quit on the pursuit of history, no team has won every game in a 16 game regular season and gone on to win the Super Bowl. The Colts told us that they were not interested in that, and instead wanted only to focus on the Super Bowl. They did not meet the one goal that was important to them.

The Saints were also 13-0, but their first loss came to the Cowboys in week 15, in a game where Dallas dominated, and was not a result of the starters coming out in the 3rd. The Colts quit in week 16 with a 15-10 lead. The Cowboys were up 17-3 at the half, and the Saints scored 2 fourth quarter touchdowns and still had Drew Brees in the game in the final seconds trying to keep the perfect season in tact.

There have been many who defended the Colts call to rest at the end of the regular season. The Patriot's season ending injury to Wes Welker in a meaningless week 17 game is one example. Welker was out for their loss to the Ravens. Another can be made in seeing a less effective Dwight Freeney hobbling in the second half of the Super Bowl. There were several questions about Freeney's status leading up to the game, he did start and had a sack in the first half, but struggled as the game progressed.

As for me, as a Patriot's fan, I am still glad the team went for it all in 2007, even though they did come up short in Arizona in the Super Bowl against the Giants. Some where, there is a saying about being better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. Or the old adage that quitters never win. Or some fable about a dog and a bone.
</intro>

    <intro>
    Come on, be honest. You wanted the Saints to win yesterday's Super Bowl.

    Unless you are a Colts fan, you wanted the Saints to win. It was a win that may have gone beyond the game for all Americans.

     Did the city of New Orleans need this win?

     Of course not. Let's put this in it's proper context. It was just a football game. The box office in New Orleans can't improve. They sell out all the time. Nobody lived or died because of it.

     Do you think Louisana's unemployment rate will suddenly nose dive?

     Hardly. But if any NFL city deserved this, it would be the Saints if only for the morale of a great American city.

     For this one moment in time we neutral fans climbed abord the Saints bandwagon. America united behind the city of New Orleans after Katrina and Rita devastated Louisiana. .

     The game was in Miami but it was almost a Saints home game.

      Truthfully, any stadium outside of Indiana would have served as home turf for the Saints. That Saints bandwagon was full and the Colts were well aware of it.

     So, I had black and gold pom poms hanging off my Joe Montana poster and my neighbors in Raider Nation dangled beeds off their spiked collars...we were all Saints for a day.

     And I'm suer that somewhere in the French Quarter, Cheeseheads, Cowboys and Hogs are celebrating the Saints victory.

     I'm willing to bet that even Archie Manning was out on the party circut last night. Peyton would never have to know. I can imagine his anguish, trying not to celebrate his franchise's championship.

     As for the game, itself, the lack of downfield passing suprised me. Both teams dropped safties into the next zip code and the covers corner as best as could be expected. There were no huge plays on offense for either team.

     Both quarterbacks stayed upright and fired darts all game long. Drew Brees and Peyton Manning combined to set Super bowl records for completionswith 64. Yet the only big play came on Tracy Porter's 74-yard interception run for the game breaking touchdown.

    New Orleans got very litle from their running game, Brees handed off only 18 times and the Saints got less than three yards a pop.

     Breese won this with the patience of a chess master and the accuracy of a marksman.

     Although he only averaged 7.4 yards per completion, he only failed to connect on seven of his 39 pass attempts.

     This was probably the greatest exhibition in Super Bowl history, although maybe not the most exciting. I'm sure the Saints and their nation are happy with the out come.

     Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints...Well done, indeed!

     Now America can get off your bandwagon.

    <intro>
Some First Quarter thoughts...

Saints won the toss calling heads, so there goes that prop. bet. Saints went 3 and out. Best commercial so far, McDonalds remake of the horse commercial featuring Dwight Howard and LeBron James, but Larry Bird ends up winning the meal...

Colts score first...3-0

Colts get the ball, move the ball well, and end up with a field goal for a 3-0 lead. More commercials... the Bud Light house is cool, the Betty White Snickers is great, and the Tim Tebow ad should not have created a controversy, the abortion people helped Tebow by making such a big deal out of it....

Marcus Colston, sorry Drew Brees hit you in the face with the ball wide open on 2nd and 7... Saints did have a first down in this drive, but once again punt, and down the ball deep in Indy territory

Colts score again 10-0

Colts are looking really strong, moving the ball well, and even using the rush, they were reported to not have a very good running game. Colts lead 10-0. A 96 yard drive matches the longest in Super Bowl history. More commercials, Simpsons Coke commercial with Monty Burns going broke, consoled by a Coke.

It was two completely different quarters, Colts dominated the first, and led 10-0. The Saints answered in the second, but only scored 6.

Saints score 3 to get on the board

Saints look better starting the 2nd, and move the ball with enough success to get a field goal to make it 10-3...Dwight Freeney seems to be doing just fine with a big sack on 3rd down....

Saints defense finally stops Indianapolis from scoring, Pierre Garcon had a dropon 3rd down (of course he did score a TD earlier)... most surprising commercial might be Jay Leno and Oprah Winfrey with David Letterman...

Saints score again, 10-6

Saints continue to move the ball, but fail to score with a first and goal inside the five. They were driven back by a false start, but went for it on fourth down. It was a gutsy call, but failed. The defense responded by forcing a Colts punt. Saints got it back at midfield. Saints dominated the second quarter, but still can not find the end zone. Quarter ends with another Saints field goal.

On-sides kick by the Saints recovered by the Saints to start the half. Sean Payton is coaching with no fear...Just a quick question, when did every team's fan base become a nation?

Saints take their first lead, 16-10

Pierre Thomas scores a TD for New Orleans as they carry the momentum from the on-side kick. CBS says it was the first successful on-side kick in the Super Bowl before the fourth quarter.... more ads: VW punchbuggy with Stevie Wonder is quite funny...

Colts retake lead 17-13

Suddenly, this is becoming the high scoring affair that everyone predicted. The Colts move the ball well, scoring another Touchdown on a Joseph Addai rush.

Saints close the gap, still trail 17-16

Garrett Hartley kicks his third field goal of more than 40 yards, that has not been done before in the Super Bowl. Also more points in this quarter (17) than the first half (16)

Starting the 4th...

Colts move the ball to start the quarter, including a successful conversion on 4th and 2. But the end result was a missed field goal on an extra long attempt.

Jeremy Shockey catches a TD from Drew Brees as the Saints retake the lead. The two point conversion fails, and New Orleans leads 22-17. People with the obscure 2 in football squares rejoice across the USA, especially those with payouts for every score and not just at the end of a quarter.

Correction.... upon further review, New Orleans challenges the call, and it is overturned. From Nick Scott on Twitter "Getting that 2-point conversion = New Orleans no longer allowed to complain about Katrina." I don't know where to begin with what is wrong there....

The Colts were stopped on 4th down with less than a minute to go and it is over.

Saints 31, Colts 17

GAME CHANGER Tracy Porter with the interception for a TD, what they call a pick 6 and New Orleans now leads 31-17. The New Orleans defense has been maligned as one of the worst, ranked 25th. To add on to that, some said Minnesota only lost the NFC Championship because they turned the ball over so much. Doesn't some of the credit on a turnover go to the defense?

Jason Biggs in American Pie 2) play his wonderful version of the trombone in his tight sky-blue shorts in preparation for Super Bowl XLIV, I've realized two things leading into today's version of the Super Bowl. What a great game it should turn out be as well.

What a shocker (note sarcasm is on Level Red) Warren Sapp broke the law and apparently choked a woman Saturday in a hotel room. The television studios and radio stations get what they deserve when they hire those such as Sapp, Michael Irvin and other former NFL clowns.

One factor in Irvin's favor however is the fact his alleged "rape" occurred three years ago. If the woman was in fact violated in 2007, she shouldn't just be coming out of the woodwork. It sounds like a shoddy way of making money to me. Irvin does have a clouded past and was punished.

The final and most important aspect I bring to you in this brief post before I get ready for the game is the fact the Saints will find a way to stop Peyton Manning when it matters the most, come out victorious today 34-28 and provide quite a festive parade in the city of New Orleans.
</intro>

    <intro>
For the first time in decades, the two best teams in the NFL throughout the season are actually going to be playing each other in the Super Bowl later today.

The irony behind this game is the fact that quarterback Peyton Manning of the AFC champion Indianapolis Colts is the son of the Saints most remembered star and he grew up rooting for the Saints because his dad was the quarterback. Talk about mixed emotions.

The Colts are 5-point favorites in the game and regardless of his dads ties to the Saints, Manning will be trying to spoil the Big Easy’s goal of a championship. He may just end up breaking the Saints heart in the process.

Back in the days when Archie Manning led the Saints and they were more known as the Aints, New Orleans was still a football town, even when fans wore paper bags on their heads. And Manning always gave that team a glimmer of hope with his attitude and his never ending desire to win. He was the lone star on a terrible team that the town still loved with a passion.

However, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the love for the Saints has grown into enormous proportions throughout not only New Orleans, but the whole country as well. It also helps that the Saints have been winners since that catastrophe.

“It’s important for not only the people in New Orleans, but I think the people around the country because you do understand how much it means to that community and what they’ve been through,” Brees said. There’s a bond that we have with our fans—between our organization and our fans—that’s truly special.”

The Saints (15-3) led the league in scoring with 510 points. The Colts (14-2) also have a prolific offensive unit with a deep receiving corps and possibly the best quarterback in the history of the game in Peyton Manning.

With these two high powered offenses, it is highly possible that they could surpass the record 75 points that were scored in the 1995 Super Bowl (San Francisco 49, San Diego 26). With these two teams they might even do it by halftime.

This will certainly be one championship that will not be won with defense.

Both the Colts and the Saints went into December unbeaten as the Colts were 14-0 and the Saints were 13-0 before falling to the Cowboys. Both teams then rested starters and lost games because of it.

Regardless of the negative press at the time concerning resting their starters, it did not matter as they are both in Miami and playing each other in the Super Bowl.

So will it be Peyton’s Place or Mardi Gras in Miami? Once the game has ended and the final gun has sounded will it be Hoosier Heaven or Who Dat Dances?

Your guess is as good as mine, but either way, it should be a heck of a game.

</intro>

    <intro>
Is it just me or are people getting a little too carried away over the New Orleans Saints. I know most of you will be pulling for the Saints to pull it off tomorrow, but I’m here for your reality check; the Saints won’t win the Super Bowl.

Sorry, but they won’t. They aren’t playing the mistaken prone Minnesota Vikings or the no offense having New York Jets, they are playing arguably the best player in the league in Peyton Manning.

Unlike Brett Favre, Manning will take a sack rather then to risk his health or throw an interception. Manning rarely makes mistakes which is not good for a Saints defense who likes to capitalize on them.

I know you Saint fans are saying well, what about Dwight Freeney? What about him? Manning spent most of his career carrying the Colts, you think one player (although the second best player on team) is going to stop him?

Then you guys say, what about Drew Brees? Brees is a great player in his own right, but the problem won’t be Brees, it will be the Saints defense. The Saints got to this point mainly because of Brees, not because of their defense.

They gave up 35 points to Favre and the Vikings in a win, what makes you think Manning won’t put up the same numbers or even more? He put up great numbers against the number one defense in the league and unless he breaks his leg before the game, I’m guessing he’ll have no problem putting up even better numbers against the 26th ranked defense in the NFL.

Yeah I realize the Saints are the sentimental favorite of a lot fans out there and a lot of NFL analyst too, but they seem to have forgotten about the Manning Factor in all of this.

Don’t think for one second that Manning isn’t pissed off by the comments some of the Saints are saying about him. He is cold and calculating and I believe like a surgeon, he will crave the Saints secondary up and cement his place as maybe the best player in NFL history.
</intro>

    <intro>
     Yeah, I Know. Everyone has an opinion as to what tomorrow's Super Bowl Game may shape up to be.

     So here's what I have to say.

     If you're looking for one player to make a difference, Reggie Bush is that one. The irony is that we have no idea as to what capacity he will control the game. But somewhere, his name will be stamped into our heads after tomorrow.

     The Indianapolis Colts are not run by ididots. They are not going to give Bush any clean, fieldable kicks on special teams. With that Bush has alredy won the special teams battle. If he get his hands on more that three fieldable punts, Bush will go over the 100-yard mark and that won't sit well in Indianapolis' game plan.

     Then, we wonder will the Colts have to punt that many times?

     The knock on Bush has always been that he's not a true running back and not complete enough to be a true featured halfback.

     If given ten handoffs tomorrow, he should easiliy go for over 60 yards. I'm not sicking my neck out in saying that he may slip through and take one to the house, either.

     And what about Drew Brees? I'm sure he knows exactly what time to hit Bush with a designed screen that has a chance of going 50-plus yards.

     If given the ball, Reggie Bush is the most dangerous player in football. This is the type of game that he will take control of.

     If there was ever a sleeper in a Super Bowl game--Bush is it. His statistical season is simple to read. He's done a little bit of this, a little bit of that and the numbers don't add up to any thing substantial. He didn't break the 10-touchdown mark this season.

     And tomorrow, his numbers arent going to be the greatest. But they will be the busiest. If the Saints throw him seven complete passes and ten handoffs, he'll get yardage. But against the Colts' defense, he needs to make every yard count and hold on to the football.

     To pick one player that would make the difference in the Super Bowl, Reggie Bush is it. He's the ultimate X-factor between the two teams.

     Don't bombard me with stats. I know that he hasn't run any punt back for touchdows this year. I know that he's a fifth on the Saints depth chart as it relates to ball handling. But make no mistake, the Colts know that Bush is the most dangerous person wearing black and gold. They may fear him enough to make mistakes on the Saints primary weapons. Marques Colston and Robert Meachem are not to be left alone within Brees' range.

     Breese has so many weapons at his disposal. It's convenient to have a Jermey Shockey open beyond the range of your opposition's linebackers.

     This is a game that the defenses are going to falter--they have no choice. Do you really expect a 17-14 final score, tomorrow?

     Wake up. Anything short of 75 points in this one is a bust. I don't see how either defense can stop the other. And these are two outstanding defenses, too. I just can't see how Brees or Payton Manning could be stooped in this one.

     As I've stated, Picking Reggie Bush as the game's X-factor is not going out on a limb. We all know what he's capable of doing and how he is able to control a game even if he only touches the ball 15 times.

     In a New orleans victory, Bush would have to be a pre-game MVP frontrunner.

     I believe the Saints will win and I know the Colts are the better team. So my opinion means...I'm a disgruntled 49er fan wondering why my team sucks compared to these guys.

     Geaux Saints...38-33...That's my take.
</intro>

    <intro>
The Pro Football Hall of Fame denied Richard Dent’s entry into the class of 2010, the sixth time in the last seven years he had been a finalist only to be left off the final ballot.

If offensive linemen were as effective at keeping Dent away from their quarterbacks as much as the Hall of Fame's 44-member selection board keeps blocking him from the Hall, this would not be so devastating for Dent, whose nickname was "The Colonel."

The former Bears defensive end has been eligible for eight years and a finalist for seven years, including this year.

The fact that this years hall of Fame inductees include two defensive players that do not have the credentials equal to Dent, such as Saints linebacker Rickey Jackson and Vikings defensive end John Randle has to make you wonder two things.

1. Why?

2. Will Dent ever make it into the Hall of Fame?

He was the playmaker on arguably the most dominant defense ever in the NFL. Without Dent, the Bears' 1985 season and the Super Bowl victory never happens.

When Dent retired from football, he was third all-time in career sacks. Dent averaged almost a sack per game with 0.92 sacks per start during his career. Only one defensive end in the modern era had a higher rate then Dent, Fred Dean with 1.14 sacks per start. Dent's sack ratio was higher than legendary sack men Reggie White (0.87), Bruce Smith (0.75) and Michael Strahan (0.69).

But it was not just about sacks with Dent as he was also an excellent run stopper.

Dent also had eight interceptions in his career which is tied for the most interceptions by modern-era defensive lineman. He also broke up 60 passes and forced 38 fumbles during his career. The last two numbers did not become official stats until 1994, but if you compare Dent with any defensive end in the NFL since that time, he leads in both categories.

There are only three players from the Bears dominant Super Bowl XX champions in the Hall of Fame, and one of them is a much deserved offensive player in Walter Payton. The defense, which is considered by some to be the best in the history of the NFL, has only two players from that squad in the Hall of Fame, linebacker Mike Singletary and defensive lineman Dan Hampton.

Dent was expected by many to become the third player from that dominant defense to make the Hall given the fact that he had made the cut to the final 10 last year. Dent once again made the final 10 again this year before once again being denied.

This is a travesty in all sense of the word. Richard Dent was one of the most dominant defensive ends in the history of the game, was a key ingredient in his teams success, and he definitely deserves to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Hopefully one of these years, the voting members of the Hall of Fame will get their heads out of their butts, look at the facts, and agree.

</intro>
