<intro>

Passing puberty does not keep a boy from collecting heroes. Children are indeed precious, but there’s an eternal misnomer that once a male hits 21 he is fully developed, unable to daydream or construct an idol.

Evander Holyfield is one of mine. I adopted him in my 20s, when he was in his 30s. Physically perfect and perfectly humble, Holyfield won without the machismo, under the aegis of Jesus, a smile being the closest he came to boasting. His résumé is evident enough without a cut-and-paste on this page.

We have amply frowned upon “Warrior” (Holyfield’s moniker) as an athletic label. Too many limbless soldiers wheel their way back to American hospitals for us to lose perspective. Athletes of the highest order are performers, artists who keep score.

Art is an abstract expression, largely depictions of thought. Though art is very powerful, it doesn’t really happen, meaning that the expression itself is the ending. I enjoyed “Edge of Darkness,” but Mel Gibson didn’t really kill anyone in pursuit of his daughter’s killer.

Evander Holyfield really whipped Mike Tyson’s ass. That’s the thing. And he did it to the glee of a million boys and men who loathed Tyson and his avatar, men who walked with presumed dominance. Tyson admittedly mugged people for lunch money, at least until he found the one kid in school who punched back. Buster Douglas cracked the aura in 1990, and Holyfield shattered it in 1996.

Perhaps it was sweeter and purer than Clay beating Liston because there were too many political (and Cosa Nostra) components in 1964 and ’65. And while Ali was the greatest heavyweight in history, we know he was one to chat a bit.

If cynics observe Holyfield literally, he’ll be sketched a sanctimonious bible-thumper who has fathered a tribe out of wedlock. And he has. Despite this, I don’t doubt the sincerity of his religious beliefs. Only a higher purpose can explain Holyfield’s ascent with inferior talent. What did he do well other than take a punch?

Muhammad Ali, a carouser of comparable depth, fought for one deity, Holyfield for another. No, he does not have Ali’s boxing gifts or social gravitas. He instead quietly inspired a generation during an epoch of crotch-clutching, slam-dunking, home run posing, “SportsCenter” branded moves.

Approaching 50, Holyfield now fights under the dim lights of dementia, a sagging superstar as likely to drool on his gloves as bleed on them. He has lost five of his last nine bouts to names we’ll never know. And I was foolish to think there would be a different ending.

Defending his title several times after he whipped Tyson, Holyfield lost twice to Lennox Lewis (though the judges scored one a draw) in 1999, which should have been his last year of boxing. He is scheduled to fight Frans Botha this year, an entire decade being the bottleneck between his prime and his pasture.

Holyfield is halfway through his descent into mental and financial ruin. His mansions are being foreclosed, the mother of his children nipping at his knees for child support. His speech (never his strength) is slurring, each vowel lost to a slumbering tongue.

Ali indeed has Parkinson’s, but so does Michael J. Fox, and Fox can speak. Ali cannot because of innumerable concussions he suffered every fight after his thirtieth birthday, which could very well be in the hundreds. By contrast, football players have retired with fewer than ten concussions.

There are few beacons at the end of the boxing tunnel, as Holyfield is sure to learn, extending the irony that those who have accomplished the most at dawn often have the least colorful dusk.

Holyfield won more than a belt when he beat Tyson. He wore the largest symbolic crown: anti-bully. Most boys have met a Tyson in their youth. You were a freshman and he was a sophomore. He pushed you and your pals around with impunity. Mine was a guy I’ll call J.D.

One day J.D. came to class with his face pummeled, his eyes swollen like purple walnuts. He donned shades for a week, speaking little, his career as class thug over. I don’t know who did it and thus I never had a chance to thank him. So I thank Evander instead.

Toward the end of the aforementioned film, a man asks about Gibson’s condition. Terminal, he was told. “We’re all terminal,” was his retort. That is a quintessential truth. I just wish my heroes were not in such a hurry.

The beautiful city of Guadalajara is renowned for its rich history, landscape, architecture, and its production of extraordinary talent. World renowned artist Jose Clemente Orozco who led the “Mexican Muralism” movement with Diego Rivera, Mexican Nationalist and composer/pianist Jose Pablo Moncayo, and arguably the most important Mexican architect of the 20th Century, Luis Barragan, were all conceived in this “cultural center” of western Mexico. So it should be of no surprise that Guadalajara strikes again.

Following in the footsteps of the thousands of Mexican pugilists before him, Abner Mares is on the precipice of greatness. To be courted and signed by Golden Boy Promotions is always precursor positive. In addition, Mares has joined the Espinoza Boxing Club “fraternity” which boasts the development of a stable of boxing champions, most notably two-time former WBC Super Bantamweight champ Israel Vasquez.

HBO’s longtime boxing anchor Larry Merchant has dubbed Mares’ style as “Techno-Boxing”, or technical fighting, whereby the classic term boxing pundits would use is the “Boxer-Puncher”. Perhaps Mares does deserve a new style classification. The orthodox fighter has cultivated an unbelievable right hand worthy of style points, which tends to lead his opponents towards the realm of unconsciousness. His left hand is not much more pleasant. In addition to his posh over hand right, lead uppercuts to the body and head have become signature. How can you route against a young man who enters the ring in “Bernard Hopkins-esque” fashion, covering his face with a bandana while sporting a black baseball cap? Mean.

Ironically, the 24 year-old boxer who grew up in Hawaii Gardens, California is a well spoken family man and student (Cerritos Community College), who just so happens to make a living through licensed assault. Sporting a professional record of 19-0-0 with 12 KO’s, the heavy handed fighter who represented Mexico in the 2004 Olympic Games, has called California his home for the last 17 years. Training under the guidance of boxings elite trainers Floyd Mayweather, Sr., Nacho Beristain, and currently Joel Diaz, who also instructs current WBO Junior Welterweight Champion Timothy Bradley, Mares is on the beaten path to success.

On May 22nd at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Abner Mares will be facing undefeated and newly crowned IBF Bantamweight title holder Yohnny Perez (20-0, 14KO’s) of Colombia. As the undercard bout to the fourth meeting between featherweight “giants” Israel Vasquez and Rafael Marquez, Mares vs. Perez has the possibility of being just as explosive. I am looking forward to Mares winning the biggest fight of his life to date, and solidifying his place at the top of the division with a unanimous decision or late round stoppage.

The son of Guadalajara has the chance to become great. He has been quoted as saying that he wants to be the best in the sport—an icon. Championships dwell on the other side of focus and exhaustion, and it will take that kind of mind set and self-inflicted punishment, i.e. training, to take the keys.

What is it about Guadalajara that it has produced some the world’s best writers, painters, poets, and perhaps prizefighters? Is it the brave blood of the Caxcan and Zacateco, or the determination of the Conquistador that makes its people great? I would guess it’s the blend of the two. And when harmoniously in concert, they can make music out of body shots that rival the percussion of street drummers in the “Pearl of the West”. Abner Mares, without a doubt, is on his way to becoming a great fighter. How great? That is up to him.

    <intro>
New York City– After six soporific fights, the National Anthem awakened Madison Garden to three stellar bouts, bringing heat to a frigid Manhattan.

Middleweight John Duddy kicked off the authentic boxing action. Wielding a leaden jab and thudding body shots, Duddy forced his opponent, Juan Astorga, to a knee just a minute into the fight. A few seconds and a flurry later, Astorga collapsed once again, clutching his ribs, not to regain his stance, at 1:55 of the first round, to the glee of Duddy’s throng of throaty Irish supporters, the three-colored flag of his homeland waving above the ropes.

Duddy left the ring 28-1 (18 KO). Astorga’s record fell to 14-4-1 (9 KO).

**********

Michael Buffer’s baritone introduction brought the first fight for an actual belt, between featherweights Rogers Mtagwa and defending WBA champion Yuriorkis Gamboa.

More of a massacre than a fight, Gamboa’s chiseled shoulders fired jabs and left hooks that could only be caught by cameras. A hook floored Mtagwa with five seconds left in the first round, as the bell sounded before the referee finished wiping his gloves.

Retreat is not in Mtagwa’s vernacular, and thus Gamboa made him suffer, switching to body shots and lead right hands in the second round, staggering Mtagwa several times before flattening him again halfway through the round. Mtagwa stood up, austere, gloves up, before being dropped again, while the prudent, kneeling referee waved his hands to signal the end at 2:35 of the second round. In a sad summary, Rogers Mtagwa landed just ten punches the entire fight.

Gamboa left the ring 17-0 (15 KO), while a game Mtagwa dipped to 25-14-2 (18 KO).

**********

In the main event, featherweight Steven Luevano defended his WBO belt against Juan Manuel Lopez.

In an odd clash of lefties, each fighter pawed his way through the first round, flicking occasional jabs that didn’t land. Two gifted fighters, they shed some caution in the second, trading stiff jabs and body shots, with Lopez seemingly getting the best of it.

In the third round Lopez let fly, snapping a straight left that clearly hurt Luevano, though Lopez could not get him to the canvas. Lopez stalked Luevano the rest of the round, with Luevano attempting to fend off attacks with his jab. Lopez hurt Luevano at the end of the round, but the bell truncated his attack.

The first half of the fourth round saw much stalking with little punching. It was clear, however, that Lopez commanded the ring, and he ended it appropriately, hurting Luevano until the bell stopped him.

By the fifth round it turned into a glorified sparring session, with Luevano playing the role of woeful sparring partner, a corporeal heavy bag for Lopez’s combinations. Eyes swelling, it seemed that a brave Luevano was ready for sleep. In the sixth each fighter seemed to take a breather, though Luevano did little more than claw his way out of danger. Lopez looked clean, fresh, and dangerous – landing almost at his whim.

The following round was the chapter of a book that had already been written. Lopez forced Luevano into a corner, landing nearly a dozen unanswered punches – first to the body, then two to the jaw – before a beleaguered Luevano crouched and crumbled under the ropes. The Puerto Rican faithful (as the Irish had done for Duddy) sang in varied songs. The fight officially ended by knockout at :44 of round seven. And hence the political jockeying for a featherweight unification bout between Lopez and Gamboa begins.

Lopez left the ring as champion with a record of 28-0 (25 KO), while Luevano loses the fight and his belt with a record of 37-2-1 (15 KO).

**********

In a sense, it’s tough to watch boxing fandom dissolve into pockets of ethnic tribes. Great fights and great fighters should be enjoyed regardless of skin tones, nations, or languages. But at least these followings allow a once-hallowed arena like MSG to stoke a dim flame.

Rounding out the undercard, cruiserweight Carlos Negron (7-0) won a unanimous decision over Garrett Wilson (7-3); welterweight Tommy Rainone (12-3) defeated Gerardo Prieto (6-8-1) by unanimous decision; light heavyweight Will Rosinsky (10-0) toppled Markas Gonzalez (7-3) by unanimous decision; bantamweight Jorge Diaz (11-0) knocked out Tommy Atencio (4-4) at 1:27 of the first round; super lightweight Chris Algieri (10-0) edged James Hope (4-4) by unanimous decision; and, finally, super welterweight Pawel Wolak (26-1) dominated Ishmail Arvin (15-2) by, what else, a unanimous decision.

    <intro>
Today was the last day to watch Ali on demand.

Somehow, I missed it in 2001, and in any other opportunity to watch it until now. And I know there are always things that are not accurate when Hollywood gets involved. Still, I thought Will Smith's performance was excellent.

I was born in 1969, so some of the events happened before I was born and others happened when I was quite young. Still, it helped connect memories I had, of the greatest claiming he could "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee". Or hearing Howard Cosell's famous call of "Down goes Frasier! Down goes Frasier!". The movie gave insight to Cosell's relationship with Ali and made Cosell look like a good guy.

Other parts were kind of funny, like seeing George Foreman in the Rumble in the Jungle. Because I usually think of George Foreman because of his grill. Or his comebacks that could make Brett Favre seem like a young man. And speaking of a young man, it was interesting to see the character of Don King as a young promoter.

Still, the overwhelming feeling I got is what happened to boxing? Ali was larger than life. Even in the late 80's I remember going to parties in Martha's Vineyard on the night of the big fight for a pay per view event. And when I was driving a taxi in Boston in the 90's, I can remember fight nights when fares would be going to parties to see the fight.

One other memory of Ali is when Muhammad Ali came to my office. I was working at Sunlife. At the time it was a little known Canadian company. Now they have commercials with KC and the Sunshine band. Parkinsons disease had just started to begin. In a way it was sad to see what had happened to the greatest.

And it also leaves me wondering what happened to this once great sport.
</intro>

    <intro>
Wrapped in a green turtleneck and tweed jacket, Bob Arum kicked off Top Rank’s pre-fight press conference for Saturday’s championship fight between featherweights Juan Manuel Lopez and Steven Luevano at Madison Square Garden.

Luevano (37-1-1, 15 KO) is defending his WBO crown, looking to hand Lopez (27-0, 24 KO) his first professional loss.

A second championship fight precedes the main event, another featherweight bout, pitting Yuriorkis Gamboa (16-0, 14 KO) against Rogers Mtagwa (26-13-2, 18 KO). Gamboa is defending his WBA title.

Press conferences are, well, boring. Anyone who has covered one will confirm this, unless Mike Tyson decides to test his culinary skill on Lennox Lewis’s leg.

After Arum and a conga line of talking heads praised each other for whatever they do, three of the four fighters spoke at the podium (Gamboa was still in Miami). Each fighter (except Luevano) needed a translator to convey their scripted platitudes, thanking HBO and Arum for everything short of saving the planet.

With so many belts and names, and so little mainstream coverage, the fight could well be billed, “Clash of the Consonants.” All four boxers are talented, but in a perfect promotional world, the two champions (Lopez & Gamboa) will win and then unify the title as two featherweights with heavyweight cache.

Though this reporter came to see another fighter.

Notre Dame be damned, John Duddy is New York’s authentic fighting Irishman. After migrating to America in 2003, Duddy has been adopted by Madison Square Garden, which will surely be packed with a phalanx of rabid (if not imbibed) Irish supporters.

Young, white, and handsome may not be the normal elixir it would have been in the Gerry Cooney days, as there can be no “White Hope” for what some see as a hopeless sport.

But Duddy (27-1, 17 KO), a middleweight, counters the cynics with a stiff jab, heavy right hand, and no fear of blood. Leading with his chin as often as his gloves, he is the first to admit that he takes too many punches. His style and persona, however, remind us of that time when boxing was great and, most importantly, when it was fun.

Duddy faces Juan Astorga (14-3, 9 KO) in an 8-round undercard bout, with Irish eyes presumably smiling.

Japan is historically and culturally connected with all things brave. Take a moment to examine the Samurai code in feudal Japan, Kamikaze aviators from WWII, the Shinobi and the art of stealth, and of course Sumo wrestling. Who doesn’t love watching 300 pound men “bulldoze” each other in a diaper? In all seriousness, Japanese boxers have established themselves as a dominant force in the Strawweight through Junior Featherweight divisions, and have done so in an entertaining manner.

As a frame of reference, Japan’s first boxing gym was built in Tokyo in 1921; 2 years after Jack Dempsey won the World Heavyweight title from Jess Willard. Thirty-one years later, Japan produced its first World Champion, Yoshio Shirai, who captured the Flyweight crown from Salvador (Dado) Marino in 1952. Shirai was literally a “diamond in the rough”, as he was lucky to be alive, as this occurred 7 years after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The smooth orthodox pugilist from Tokyo passed away at the blessed age of 80 years old in 2003. He will remain a legendary figure for the sport in Japan, and in the hearts of boxing fans, forever. Shirai remains a source of inspiration for the 40+ World Champions that the home of the cherry blossom has produced, since his hand was raised in victory.

The most dominant years of Japanese prizefighters was in the 1960’s and early 70’s. Masahiko Harada, current president of the Japanese Boxing Commission (JBC), captured championships in the flyweight (1962) and bantamweight (1965) divisions. As a matter of fact, in the early 70’s, “The Land of the Rising Sun” simultaneously had 5 reigning World Champions. To name a few, Guts Ishimatsu, Koichi Wajima, and Yoko Gushiken, all played a part during this “golden era”, echoing the voice of recognition when it comes to Japanese boxing.

The early 2000’s seem to be making a heroic attempt to be heralded in the same manner. The short list of the current and rising pugilists from Japan include Nobuo Nashiro (current WBA Super Flyweight Champ), Takefumi Sakata (Former WBA Flyweight Champ), Toshiaki Nishioka (current WBC Super Bantamweight Champ), Koki Kameda (WBC Flyweight Champ), and Hozumi Hasegawa. Hasegawa, a fan favorite, is the current WBC Bantamweight Champion, and has defended the title 10 times.

The 29 year-old southpaw touts a record of 28-2-0, and is as technically proficient as any top prizefighter in the sport. Hasegawa knocked out his last opponent, Alvaro Perez, in the fourth round and cracked many boxing pundits Top 10 P4P list—including my own. In addition, Hasegawa was voted Japanese Boxing MVP for the second year in a row by the JBC. Recently there have been talks of Hasegawa traveling across the Pacific and continuing his career in the U.S. Hopefully, this will lead to a bout between the champion from Hyogo, and Golden Boy’s promising Mexican prospect, Abner Mares, who is managed by Frank Espinoza of the Espinoza Boxing Club (also manages Israel Vasquez, Martin Castillo, Carlos Molina, Ronny Rios, etc.).

With the 2012 London Olympic Games 2 years away, watch for Japan to make a serious statement in the lighter divisions. Media networks like TBS, TV Tokyo, TV Asahi, Fuji TV, and NTV are having a tremendous impact on the popularity of the sport with the youth. In addition WOWOW, the first private satellite broadcasting station in Japan, features 5 hours of boxing programming per week that generally features National as well as World Champions.

Contrary to popular belief, “boxing’s rising”—especially in Japan. It is always promising when boxing champions begin to emerge in all parts of the world. It reinforces the desire for all things to grow, as it continues to expand its fan base and marketing potential. With a global collective effort, boxing has the chance to turn fans on the periphery into real fans of the “sweet science”. Like a samurai walking from city to city conquering souls for the Shogun with the sword, boxing will conquer the hearts of potential fans around the world with its hands. God Bless Japan.

</intro>

<![endif]-->THE SPORT of professional boxing will continue to advance and captivates boxing fans all over the globe in 2010.

THE SPORT of professional boxing will continue to advance and captivates boxing fans all over the globe in 2010.

The likes of Filipino boxing superstar Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao and American boxing icon Floyd Mayweather Jr. will continue to dominate the headlines in the sport in 2010.

Pacquiao the acknowledge top boxer in the world today is set to continue his boxing career against big named professional boxers one of whom is Mayweather, the former top boxer of the world.

But aside from the two, young but talented boxers are also projected to have a big year in the year of the Tiger.

Two of these rising young boxers who will captivate global boxing fans are British boxing hero Amir Khan and Puerto Rican boxing star Cesar Seda Jr.

Khan had a successful 2009 after starting that year in a sour note as he loses to unheralded Bredis Prescott earlier in a humiliating first round knockout.

With his loss in-front of his hometown fans, many have doubted the boxing skills of Khan and counted him out among the future title holders in boxing.

Despite his sad loss, Khan still persevered and hired the services of legendary American boxing coach Freddie Roach to revive his career.

Like an angel, Roach, the long-time coach of Pacquiao created wonders and developed further the skills of Khan and restores his self confidence.

The new partnership of Khan and Roach resulted to three impressive victorious against Mexican boxing hero Marco Antonio Barrera, hard hitting German boxing champion Andreas Kotelnik, and recently against the tough Dmitriy Salita.

The spectacular wins of Khan made boxing experts predict that 2010 will be a good year for him and the sport of boxing in general.

Another boxer experts are closely watching in 2010 is Seda who holds an impressive and immaculate record of 18 wins with 14 knockouts.

The 23-year-old southpaw in his young age has shown superb skills and maturity that made him win against veteran boxers in the flyweight division.

Many are saying that like Khan, 2010 will be a banner year for Seda who is expected to win more and earn his first world title this year.

Indeed, 2010 promises to be a big year in professional boxing and all its millions of fan worldwide.
<intro>

A severe spike in glucose levels, or a “sugar rush”, is caused by the consumption of high glycemic foods, or foods that release high amounts of sugar into the bloodstream. The real question is, is can this phenomenon also be caused by the consumption of a high volume of punches? On Saturday, January 30th, the 2010 elite boxing schedule will commence with a welterweight title unification bout (WBC & WBA) between “Sugar” Shane Mosley and Andre “The Beast” Berto, at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, aired only on HBO.

The potential for a classic “changing of the guard” bout is one of the alluring aspects of this match up. Similar to when we saw Hearns defeat Benitez or DelaHoya defeat Chavez, “old blood” is eventually replaced by new in the sport of boxing. However, this pivotal moment in prize fighting typically takes place when the younger challenger is 100 percent ready to take his place at the “throne”. For his sake, I hope Berto will be completely ready for the challenge, because if the same Mosley enters the ring that entered the ring against Antonio Margarito in 2008, we may be waiting in the wings for a new sentry.

Tale of the Tape

Height:

Mosley 5’9”/ Berto 5’8-1/2” ADVANTAGE Mosley by ½”

Weight:

Mosley 147lbs/ Berto 147lbs EVEN

Reach:

Mosley 74”/ Berto 72” ADVANTAGE Mosley by 2”

Andre Berto of Miami, Fl fights in a style similar to the natural disaster that plagues his state of birth—a hurricane. The current WBC Welterweight title holder’s explosive approach to pugilism makes him a fan favorite amongst boxing fans around the world. This is due in part to his devastating right uppercut, but also to his lightning fast-- fingers? To say the Beast is “internet-savvy” is an understatement. Let us not omit that Andre Berto is a pioneer. He is one of the new breed of “self-marketing” athletes who promote themselves on internet networking sites and communication mediums like Twitter.

In between training, I assume, Berto finds time to socialize with his fans on the internet, by releasing motivational content, celebrity praise, where he’s partying, or even “trash talking” his next opponent. In short, he is a “Twitteraholic”. My only advice for the young “Beast” would be to take an “old school” mental approach towards the “throw back” opponent that he’s facing in Shane Mosley. Take a walk through a forest at night, chop fire wood, or perhaps begin taking cold showers. Even other boxers have “tweeted” to the Haitian-American rising star, that he may want to temporarily abandon his internet pursuits to pursue a dogged mindset against a strong, fast, and fierce opponent in the well seasoned Hall of Famer-to-be.

In 2009, Shane Mosley has had a great impact as to why boxing is on the ascent with major fights on the horizon for 2010. He not only surprised the boxing world with a devastating knockout over the “Tijuana Tornado”, but has also been instrumental as a partner with Golden Boy Promotions to bring “A Class” boxers to the public eye. In addition, with a commitment to fitness and ring tactician Nasim Richardson now in his corner, the aging veteran may have found his fountain of youth.

Mosley’s career certainly seems to be “catching a second wind”. When you couple this with his ring experience, it makes for a severe obstacle even for a young talented fighter. However, even the “magically” gifted who may believe they don’t need anything, need something. The “Urban Dictionary” defines experience as such:

                                                “If you have it, you don't need it.
                                                If you need it, you don't have it.
                                                If you have it, you need more of it.
                                                If you have more of it, you don't need less of it.
                                                You need it to get it.
                                                And you certainly need it to get more of it.
                                                But if you don't already have any of it to begin with,
                                                you can't get any of it to get started with,
                                                so you have no idea how to get any of it in the first place.
                                                Bottom line, if you've never had any of it ever. People just seem to know.”

Above all else, I believe experience will prove to be the key factor as to why Sugar Shane Mosley wins this fight. Although Berto is coming off of wins against Juan Urango, Luis Collazo, and Steve Forbes, Berto seemed to struggle at times with the latter two opponents. To his credit, Berto has improved aspects of his “game” with each of his last three title defenses. However, most boxing pundits would agree that “Sugar” Shane Mosley will be his most formidable, and definitely his “sweetest”, test to date.

In examining Mosley’s fight history, “Sugar” has consistently fought well against pressure fighters. Vargas, Mayorga, and Margarito all love to press the action with controlled, and at times, wild aggression. This style would be the best option for Berto in this fight, but unfortunately it is still a losing option. Attempting to outbox “Sugar” is even worse. Mosley is the better boxer, and can punish opponents by setting traps and effectively countering.

For all boxing fans, January 30th should be a “sweet” occasion as we witness the WBC and WBA belts unified. I still believe Andre Berto is the welterweight of the near future, but his fight against the inevitable third prize fighting Hall-of-Famer donning the nickname “Sugar” comes too soon. Floyd Mayweather, Sr. showed us how to make Kool Aid in HBO’s 24/7 series, and I’m officially drinking it. And let me tell you, it’s sweet--too sweet. How sweet you may ask? Let’s just say that it’s so sweet it can be bad for your health. However, the experience Berto needs to become legendary will be made available on that night at Mandalay Bay. Sip it young champion, just sip it. Or else, you could be in store for a "Sugar" rush on January 30th.
</intro>

    <intro>
Just in time for Boxing Day, the Floyd Mayweather, Jr.-Manny Pacquiao drug test scandal is putting old-fashioned punch 'em out fighting temporarily in the limelight.

'Tis the season to give the gift of joy and happiness to controversy lovers everywhere.

With Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Ultimate Fighting stealing whatever glory boxing still has, the classic sport has returned to its fail-safe strategy of attracting attention through pre-fight hype.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. & Co. suspect that opponent Manny Pacquaio may be using illegal substances to enhance his performance. Founded or not, in an effort to ensure a "fair fight", Mayweather and friends are requesting that Manny (because typing Pacquaio is annoying, there really needs to be a consonant somewhere toward the end of that name) undergo strict Olympic-style drug testing. Mayweather has graciously volunteered to undergo the same urine and blood tests, because it would completely absolve his argument if he didn't agree to do so.

Manny, who has yet to fail a drug test, refuses to comply with Mayweather's demands. Bob Arum, Manny's promoter, is retaliating with more excuses than a drunk teenager late for curfew. Arum is calling the stunt "crazy", claiming that it is a head game aimed at interrupting Manny's training and preparation for the fight.

Manny Pacquiao

Not only is boxing reliant on pre-fight stunts to induce interest, but fighters often rely on head games for motivation. As far as disturbing training, Manny will certainly have to pee many times before the fight, leaving blood testing the prominent issue in this case.

Manny claims to have no problem with the tests, except that he does not want to give blood so near to the March 13th scheduled fight date. However, if losing blood is an issue, he may want to reconsider his career as a professional boxer. If becoming weakened by the loss of blood is an issue, it doesn't matter because Mayweather will have undergone the same handicap.

"I have nothing to fear except needle itself." -No boxer has said that.

The concern may very well be that Manny is squeamish about needles. That's right. A professional concussion giver/receiver who makes a living getting/giving beat downs may be afraid of a needle. If this is true, he should have his dignity, masculinity and boxing credibility revoked. He may as well be afraid of violence, blood and crowds. It makes absolutely no sense... even less sense than the general public having interest in what holes Tiger Woods puts his balls in off the course.

Manny has tattoos, which has been used to further criticize his aversion to needles. However, being pricked is completely different from a stab-and-suck. Blood is important, especially if it has all those performance-enhancing drugs in there.

Manny has denied the allegations of illegal substance use/abuse/experimentation. All of his drugs tests have been conducted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and have cleared him of steroid use. As the fight with Mayweather is scheduled to be in Las Vegas, Manny prefers to abide by the Nevada State Athletic Commission's rules and standards. It's difficult to imagine that Nevada's system wouldn't be professional and free from corruption, but Mayweather would rather use a more advanced system.

In today's dirty sports world of lying, cheating and psycho-body sculpting, the accused are presumed guilty until proven innocent. By not agreeing to the drug tests, Manny is viewed as having something to hide. But Manny's representative Bob Arum has his own conspiracy theory. Arum believes that the drug test request gives Mayweather an out if he doesn't want the fight. This makes even less sense than a tough-guy boxer fluttering like a butterfly due to being afraid to be stung by a needle. That sentence may not have worked, but the needlepoint is that Mayweather does not get out of the fight unless Manny declines the drug testing. If Arum doesn't want Mayweather to back down, he should push Manny to get tested to keep the fight on.

Shouldn't Manny be using this "harassment" to fuel his fighting fire? There are some possible good situations for Manny. Perhaps he agrees and it turns out Mayweather isn't clean, or, more dramatically, has HIV or something. If they both are clean and Manny wins, he gets to gloat like no other, possibly prompting another big payday rematch where both fighters can agree to give it another go, but this time with the aid from all the drugs they can get their hands on.

Both fighters can make a fortune if they continue to push this issue (which is likely just a calculated non-issue brain child of a PR firm to promote the event), and use the hype to their advantage as the greats before them have so not very eloquently done before. The opportunities from such publicity are vast, and that's what boxing is really about: hype and the cash comes from it.
</intro>

    <intro>
This shouldn’t be so difficult. Drug tests are conducted all the time in most sports, so why is the Pacquiao – Mayweather fight in jeopardy because of drug testing protocol disputes? Isn’t it as simple as the authoritative body collecting blood and/or urine and conducting the tests? It seems to me that anyone who has an issue with drug test times, frequency, etc. has something to hide.

The much anticipated March 13, 2010 fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas between arguably the two best boxers in the world is now either in serious jeopardy or already “off” depending on whom you talk to.

Pacquiao is exceedingly defensive and very angry at the Mayweather camp because they continue to state he has and does use performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). The PEDs they say, are how Pacquiao has been able to move between seven different weight classes. Pacquiao denies these allegations and insists his hard work has enabled his remarkable success. Pacquiao is so upset he is threatening to not only call off the fight but to also sue Mayweather.

Pacquiao has given the “dreaded” "I maintain and assure everyone that I have not used any form or kind of steroids” statement to his fans – just as Rafael Palmeiro did to Congress years ago.

The Pacquiao – Mayweather fight is at such risk that the Pacquiao camp has already made backup plans to fight former junior welterweight titlist Paulie Malignaggi in defense of his welterweight title, despite the Malignaggi camp also having previously accused Pacquiao of taking PEDs.

I’m not sure why it’s OK for the Malignaggi camp to repeatedly accuse Pacquiao of taking PEDs but not the Mayweather camp. Could it have something to do with Pacquiao being more confident of a victory against Malignaggi?

The Mayweather camp wants Olympic-style testing with random urine and blood testing throughout training camps, during fight week and even on the day of the fight, with the power to test either fighter at any time, day or night.

Apparently the Pacquiao camp has a problem with blood testing being done in the final few days before the bout; although he did agree to submit to unlimited urine testing. So why is Pacquiao OK with anywhere, anytime urine tests but not blood tests? This certainly seems suspicious to me.

So now Pacquiao is against any mediation or arbitration and is intent on going forward with his threatened lawsuit. It appears the only concession Pacquiao will now make is to have the Nevada State Athletic Commission conduct the drug testing. According to the Pacquiao camp, "the Nevada commission is paid by the state to oversee this sort of thing. They're the governing body. The Nevada commission will not inconvenience a fighter by waking him up in the middle of the night. The other guys play games. We'll write down the protocols and let the commission go from there."

My problem with this is who in the boxing community doesn’t think the Nevada State Athletic Commission is corrupt and can be bought? They are not a legitimate agency in my mind.

With all the money to be mad on this bout you would think the two sides will work something out, but of course if there are any drug issues being hidden then the loss of future revenue would certainly outweigh the purse from this one fight.

It’s a shame that we can’t have a great, classic battle today like we had in the 70’s and 80’s with fights like Hagler – Hearns, Duran – Leonard, and Ali – Foreman just to name a few.
</intro>
