Summer not only brings blockbuster movies, but the season also brings with it some of the hottest games of the year.

XBOX 360 doesn’t have any exclusives this summer, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some killer games coming to the console this season.  Microsoft is pleased that they are ahead of Sony in the battle of console wars.  The 360 is doing well in these economic times.  Microsoft recently announced that they sold nearly 2 million consoles since the beginning of the year.  Will the 360 continue to climb sky high for the remainder of the year or will the console show a decline in sales?  Not having any exclusives might hurt the 360.

Let’s take a look at what 360 players will be playing this summer.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Batman is looking to make his debut on next generation console (if you don’t count Mortal Kombat vs. DC).  The game takes place inside Gotham City’s prison, Arkham Asylum.   At the beginning of the game, Batman captures the Joke and escorts him to Arkham.  The Joker has set a trap for Batman inside the prison and players will have to use combat and detective work to find their way out before it is to late for the Dark Knight.

Players will have third person behind the shoulder view as they guide the Dark Knight through the creepy dark asylum.  To defeat bosses, players will either have to use combat or some of Batman’s high tech gadgets.  Developers of the game promises some twists to the story line during the course of the game.  Can this be the Batman game we always been waiting for?  So far it is looking good.  The game is due out on June 23 for the XBOX 360, Playstation 3, and PC.

Prototype

Prototype is another open world game.  In Prototype, players will take control of Alex Mercer.  At the beginning of the game, Alex wakes up in a morgue with no memory why and how got there.   He soon realizes he has special powers.  His powers include such things as running extremely fast, jumping high buildings, lift heavy objects, telepathic capability, transformation, and more.

The object of the game is to figure out Alex’s past.  In order to do so, players have to use Alex’s powers to kill his supposed enemies.  When Alex kills someone, he consumes their memories, abilities, and appearances.  Gaining memories is key in order to advance the story.

If killing is not your thing, let your enemies do the killing for you.  Take control of enemies and have them fight to the death.  The developers of Prototype promise that there are over 700 combinations of powers that are at Alex’s disposal.   Prototype is due in stores on June 9.  It is also coming out for the PC and Playstation 3.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Yes, the Ghostbusters are back to kick some ghost butt.  The new game will be released on not only the Playstation 3, but on Xbox 360, Wii, Playstation 2, DS and PC.  The game’s storyline was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Rammis.  The game will feature all the original Ghostbusters, including Aykroyd, Rammis, Bill Murphy, and Ernie Hudson.  Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver decline to be in the new video game, but Alyssa Milano has stepped in to play the new love interest.

Aykroyd said the videogame is essentially Ghostbusters 3.  The game takes place 2 years after the events of Ghostbusters 2.   Players will take control of a new recruit who will play along with the original Ghostbusters.  Players can expect to taken down a horde of ghosts.  Other details of the storyline have kept under wrap.  It has been reported that players will encounter many of the ghosts from the previous Ghostbusters films including Slimer and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

The game will feature multiplayer and co-op.  IGN detailed the multiplayer modes. “Survival pits you against a "paranormal onslaught;" Containment is all about capturing every single ghost out there; Destruction charges you with destroying a bunch of ghost-spawning artifacts; you'll need to protect Egon's devices in Protection; Thief wants you to stop ghosts from stealing artifacts and Slime Dunk asks you to "dunk the most slimers," which I'm assuming means slamming them into the ghost traps.

Movie Tie-Ins

Along with the blockbuster movies coming to theatres, their movie tie-ins will be coming to console near you.  You catch games for such movies as X-Men: Wolverine, Terminator Salvation, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Sports Games Galore

If you are a sports gamer, your summer will surely not be disappointing.  For starters, Fight Night is back with Round 4.  The graphics will sure to amaze gamers.  Fight Night will include over 40 boxers, including classic boxers Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali.  Fight Night Round 4 is due on store shelves July 1.

NCAA Football 10 will be out on July 14.  The game will feature the long overdue Create-a-School feature.   Sideline reporter, Erin Andrews, is also one of the new additions.   A month after the release of NCAA Football , comes Madden 10.  The legendary and pop-culture football game series will feature many new additions including the Wildcat offense and a new broadcast experience.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 will also be dropping in the summer.  New additions to the game include bigger crowds, sharper visuals, digital scoreboards, new commentators, and real-time tournament updates.  Tiger Woods will be on store shelves on June 16.
