Why Do Chicago Teams Fall For Bums.
I use BUM as a loose term. Most o these guys aren't bums. They are underachievers, or guys on the downside of a long successfull career. Chicago professional sports teams seem to be a magnet for them. Maybe because I live in Chicago, other teams are not covered so closely, but lets run down a short list, because going through them all would be way too long.
Jake Peavy, Cy Young Winner, Padres couldn't get him off their team fast enough. comes to the White Sox on IR, and I believe ( don't quote me) has spent more time on the DL then has played in active games. He's injury prone, obviously the Padres didn't make that public or he would have been another Mark Prior ( funny, another Chicago bust).
Adam Dunn, Since 2004 pretty much a perennial All Star averaging 40 HR a year.OBP of .380 and a slugging percentage over .560. Great numbers. Free Agency NO ONE took a real stab at him. He's been in the league for 11 years and a young age of 31. I can see why the White Sox took him, but when no one really makes an effort to get him, well, you have to wonder why.
Milton Bradley, The Rangers laughed all the way to the bank when the Cubs picked him up. I believe they gave a draft pick and cash to get Bradley if I'm not mistaken, This guy couldn't stay on a team for more than 2 years. He has been a free agent since 5/16/2011.
Carlos Boozer, The Bulls needed a big man inside who could shoot and post up. Boozer did it all in Utah, but he was known to be injured and to " take off some games" if he was feeling lazy. Again, NO ONE took a stab at him in free aency, and the Bulls game him a fat contract and Jokiam Noah stepped up during the playoffs where Boozer could not. Granted he missed 21 games due to injury, but doesn't that mean he should be the most rested guy out there ? He's only 29.
Jay Cutler, OK...stop it. I know " Jay isn't a bum, he was hurt" I know...he was hurt. Torn up knee. You ask any real competitor, you are playing for an opportunity to play in the SUPER BOWL. You would have to carry anyone out on a stretcher. Coaches told him to sit...ok, you are the leader of that team. You lead your team either on the field, or from the sideline, doing whatever you can to get your team into the SUPER BOWL. You dont stand by yourself pouting on the sideline, while the back up QB is running for his life ( actually Caleb Hanie did very well in the situation). Again, Cutler was on the trading block in Denver, and no one really went after him.
Is it the scouting departments of all the Chicago teams that bad? Is it that Chicago needs to be in the race every year and refuses to acknowledge that like any other team, you need to reload and rebuild at some point. It took the Bulls almost 10 years to get good again after the Jordan era ( Eddie Curry anyone).
