Welcome to Hockeytown, again.

I can’t believe the disdain for the rematch of the Pens and Wings for the Stanley Cup, espcially by the media.  How great is it that these two teams have arrived to face each other again?   Detroit and Pittsburgh are two tough towns.  Detroit is facing its worst economic and cultural loss in decades, while Pittsburgh has remerged as a great city with a hockey fan base to rival the Wings fans.

Geographically, this Cup stinks for fans elsewhere but the eras of these two historical teams is mind blowing.  Have they not created two amazing hockey dynasties here?  I have friends who could care less about the Stanley Cup playoffs because the Colorado Avalanche isn’t making an appearance, so they’ve gone kayaking or hiking in the Rocky Mountains.  Not me.

Every year, I share my birthday with the greatest hockey week of the year.  I don’t’ care who’s playing; I will back one of the teams.  I’m still bummed that Buffalo lost to the Dallas Stars in 1999.  I’m one of those bombastic Red Wings fans, but I would love to see the Rangers, or the Bruins in a Cup race.  Of course, the Wings would win it all.  It would be incredible if the San Jose Sharks could do it next year.  I say that for my Sharks friend.

A few words about Detroit:  Abdelkader, Leino, the depth of the Wings roster came out to play.   Add Ericsson to the list.  After having an emergency appendectomy he still skated for Game 2.  Stuart steps up; Helm is out of control the way Red Wings fans like it- in your face.

A few words about the Pens:  Game 2- spent the night in Detroit; desperately want to go home and go to Primanti’s.   And put fries on that.  Game 3 and 4- Fries are good luck.

Datsyuk returns with a roar, the Pens get shut down, and Mitch Albom will write another “this is how we do it in Detroit” article.  Game 5 is in Hockeytown and we mean business.

I'm writing from Colorado, but grew up in Michigan- huge Red Wings fan. Will be moving to NY next year, so I'll be covering more Rangers stories.

I really wanted to see the Bruins play the Wings. Unfortunately, the Wings really needed this victory for the low morale in Detroit.

I was wondering if there would be an original 6 cup final, but the Bruins, who had not made the second round in 10 years, bowed out.... I agree with you that I am surprised that the "rematch" angle between the penguins and red wings didn't get more attentio, it's a rarity in sports for both teams to get back to the championship in any major sport...
