Was the Cy Young Well Deserved?
Written by Kerri Senno, Thursday November 19 2009
When I first heard that Tim Lincecum was taking home his second consecutive Cy Young award, I was a little disappointed. I was disappointed in the system, disappointed that Lincecum was winning based on his name and prowess.
Of course, I did not stop there. The Cy Young Award is granted to the player who was the best pitcher in his respective league. The award is voted by members of the Baseball Writers Association with two representatives from each team in that pitcher’s league. The award is not based solely on final statistics, because otherwise it appears that Lincecum would have fallen behind Chris Carpenter and maybe even Adam Wainwright:

Those are the stats that any casual fan can reel off. There is always more to the story, though.

Furthermore:
Lincecum was tied for first with 4 complete games.
Lincecum was 1st with Strikeouts Per 9IP with 10.425.
Lincecum was tied for first with 2 shutouts.
Would you have voted this line Cy Young?
23-7 2.48 ERA with 261 Strikeouts
Of course you would, and this would be Lincecum's line if he earned the 5 cheap wins that Adam Wainwright did, and suffered the 3 less ND that Wainwright and Carpenter also had.

Still, look at the Cards with 2 aces, why didn't they go further in the playoffs??
