Thirty years ago the Winter Olympics were held in Lake Placid, New York. The Soviet Union was still in power and their Hockey team was the best in the World. They were pros playing against amateuers. Led by captain Boris Mikhailov, they had won every gold medal since 1964. The US team was just a group of college players who were not favored to win anything.
The USA was lucky just to get to that semifinal game. They had to play the impossing Soviet Union. It was much more than a game. The Soviets and Americans were rivals in everything, sports or not. The USA won 3-2 in thrilling fashion. America went wild as millions watched Al Michaels chant that famous line that we all know. To Quote a Boston Globe staff writer"They all live on main street, were born on the Fourth of July, they all eat apple pie, and drink milk."
The only member of that team who is not alive is coach Herb Brooks. Hockey has changed a lot since then, and so has the World. Somewhere, Herb Brooks is smiling as he watches this years team.
