USA Beating Canada, Fitting

Thirty years ago today, a bunch of college kids defeated the Soviet Union in what is known as the Miracle on ice. So, it is fitting that the night before, the 2010 version of USA hockey upsets Canada in what some reporters are calling the biggest upset since 1980. What makes it even more fitting is that the two games, although 30 years apart are similar in more ways then one.

In both games, team USA was supposed to lose and in both games they won, obviously. In the 1980 miracle on ice, goalie Jim Craig stood on his head to help team USA to a victory. In last nights thriller, team USA was outshot 45-22, goalie Ryan Miller stood on his head, making 42 saves.

For the most part, both the Soviets and Canada carried the play in their respective games while the US just tried to hang on. Also, both the past and present teams had players that were heavily criticized for being on the team. In 1980 it was Mike Eruzione, all he did was score the winning goal. On the 2010 team it was Chris Drury and he helped kill off some big Canada power plays, and also scored a clutch goal by the way.

Now, in 1980 team USA had a bunch of college kids with no olympic experience what so ever and they beat a professional hockey team. I know this years team was not college kids, however, you could make the argument that they were pretty close, only having 3 players with prior Olympic experience, and only a handful of well known names, while Canada had alot, including a future hall of fame goalie.

More comparisons, team USA's jerseys looked almost exactly like the jerseys that they wore in 1980, minus a few minor details. Now, whether or not it was done on purpose, who knows, but i know that the first thing I thought of when I saw those jerseys was the 1980 team. In addition, team Canada was wearing Soviet red. Overall, whether you agree with my comparisons or not, you can't argue that it was fitting that team USA 2010 pulled off an upset on the eve of  the anniversary of a miracle.
