Uncovering A Time Capsule
Written by Chriso, Saturday September 03 2011
My Mom saves many things. My parents are moving into a smaller house, so she sent me some old items. Really old, like 30 years. I was 12. Apparently, I wanted to be a sportswriter even then. Included in the items was this article:
The Boycotters (1981)
One long baseball strike has come and gone and we're back on the ball. People who planned to boycott baseball heven't succeeded. Last night's attendance for the All Star game was 72,086, a new All Star record.
(note from 2011, I'm proud that I wrote "back on the ball" at the age of 12, also I still think that trying to boycott sports because of labor stoppages is a waste of time)
NL wins again 5-4, what's new?
Speaking of the ALL STAR game, the NL has won 19 of the last 20, and the last 9. Singleton scores early in the game with a home run for the AL. Carter ties it up with another home run. Parker is the tie breaker for the NL with another one.
Bases loaded in the 6th, Fisk on first, Evans on second, Singleton on third. Singleton scores on Lynn's hit. Evans scores on Bell's sacrifice. Same inning, Fisk scores. In the 7th, Carter makes the books with another one. Later in the same, Schmidt hits a 2 run homer. Scoring NL 5 - AL 4. Att 72,086
(apparently, I wasn't including any first names in the article)
In non sports items, there was a letter from my middle school. It was undated, but probably from the same year. I got in trouble and had to write to my mother to explain the incident. In the final paragraph, I wrote "it will go on my record". There was an extra letter from July, 1995 from the principal of my old school. He wrote "I was cleaning and uncovered this masterpiece! I thought you might enjoy it. You wrote very well." In my reply, I said "I received your package and I am forwarding copies to my mother. I hope that sending the letter to me means this incident is no longer on my record."
