U.S. shows Canada what's up (again)

Is there anything sweeter than beating someone at their own game? I mean, it's great to win when you're the heavy favorite, but it's another thing entirely to beat someone at their game, on their turf. The U.S. posted a 5-3 victory over Canada in hockey yesterday, and it was nothing short of awesome. We all know that friend who's always talking junk about the one sport he's good at. Well, this is how it feels to finally steal one from him. He might be better than you at his game, but at least you've temporarily forced him to power down his overactive piehole.

Because just like with one-sport-dude, ice hockey IS Canada. If they can't dominate on ice, they're pretty much doomed to irrelevance in every other category. If it didn't feel so good, I'd almost feel bad. Compare it to the U.S. losing at basketball, only ten times worse. At least the U.S. has other sports to hang its hat on. Canada has virtually nothing. (And no, their all-star curling squad doesn't count. I don't care what the I.O.C. thinks, the Canadian equivalent of beer pong is NOT a sport.) When Canada loses at hockey, that's IT for them. Four more fitful years of waiting for another shot at redemption.

And that's the other side of the funny-looking penny, of course. When Canada inevitably comes back for more, it will be with all the fiery vengeance of an irate moose. It might happen at this Olympics (the hockey tournament isn't over yet), or it might be four years from now, but you can be sure that Canada will reassert itself at some point. Brace yourself, because it's coming. For now, though, they can't say anything. That 5-3 victory yesterday was Canadian-goosebump worthy, and I plan on savoring it while it lasts.
