It was out like gossip in a small town as earlier this week it leaked around the league that Tyreke Evans would be surpass Brandon Jennings of Milwaukee and Stephen Curry of Golden State for the title for which all rookies strive, Rookie of the Year.  But it was not until today that it was made official as the brightest part of the Kings line up was honored and awarded the Eddie Gottlieb trophy.

As the 4th pick of the NBA Draft last year he had his work more than cut out for him in Sacramento this season.  He went on to average 20.1 points , 5.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game leading all rookies in scoring, second in assists and fifth in rebounds.  He became only the fourth rookie in league history to average at least 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game behind Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

Amongst the leaders of the rookie pack, Evans was considered the most consistent and appeared on all 123 ballots from the media panel getting 491 total points. Points are awarded with a first second and third place vote with players receiving five points for first place rankings, three for second place rankings and one for third place.

Many of the leagues current leaders all began with this rookie class honor with big names including Wilt Chamberlain in 1959-60, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1969-70, Larry Bird in 1979-80, Michael Jordan in 1984-85 and David Robinson in 1989-90 blazing a path for the league we all know today.

Over the past 20 seasons Derrick Coleman, Larry Johnson, Saquille O'Neal, Chris Webber, Grant Hill and Jason Kidd, Damon Stoudamire, Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Elton Brand and Steve Francis, Mike Miller, Pau Gasol, Amare Stoudemire, LeBron James, Emeka Okafor, Chris Paul, Brandon Roy, Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose have garnered the honor.   Evans now joins this elite company with bold future ahead in the NBA.
