The Return of Big Poppa Part 2: SF Giants Double-Dip

So we're a quarter of the way through the season, and the Giants are definitely in the hunt for the NL West title.  As anticipated, the pitching is superb, the hitting is suspect and the defense is pretty good.  I was fortunate enough to go to two games at AT&T Park last week (thank you Jack T's friends for letting me dominate them in fantasy basketball and taking their money), the Wednesday night game we lost 5-2 to the Padres (booooo!!), and the Saturday game when we beat the Astros 2-1.  I thought I would give you guys 8 things I liked about my game experiences, 8 things I didn't like, and 8 random things about the two games I went to.

Things I liked:

1. The food at the park is still fabulous (except the bratwurst).  On Wednesday, I had the hot link loaded with peppers and onions.  A great value with great taste (unlike the bratwurst).  And on Saturday I got the big Haagen Daas cup of cookies and cream ice cream.  Always awesome.  And my friends had some delicious looking and smelling cheesesteaks combo'd with the garlic fries.  Honestly, we're spoiled in Northern California with great food everywhere you go, even the ballpark (except the bratwurst).

2.  The Korean Heritage Night T-shirt was really cool.  It looks good on me, what can I say (even though I'm not Korean)?

3.  Tim Lincecum is like Optimus Prime mixed with that kid in 'Dazed and Confused'.  If you're into baseball, you have to go see a Lincecum start.  He was not pitching well on Saturday, and he only gave up one run.  When he's on, it can be magical.  Two Cy Young Awards at his age?  We are in the midst of something special.  You can feel it in the crowd on Timmy days.  It buzzes, it hums, there's an undercurrent of electricity.  And the savvy SF fans really do appreciate the greatness they're seeing.

4.  The dad and two kids who sat behind me were really cool.  The kids were very young but knew every player and their dad explained all kinds of things to them.  Just very heartwarming.  Yes, apparently I'm a sap.

5.  People cheer for Andres Torres more than i would have expected.  Like the way people loved Randy Winn last year.  It's weird, but I like it.

6.  I still love and will always love my secret free parking space near the ball park.

7.  I love, love, love the Panda hats.  I don't have one yet, but I vow to buy one this season.  I don't think we have enough bear nicknames.  I think the Giants should take full marketing advantage.  Bengie Molina can be the Golden Bear (cross marketing with Cal), Brian Wilson can be the grizzly, Matt Cain can be the polar bear, and Lincecum can be the teddy bear.

8.  There's tons of hot girls at Giants games.  Don't pretend like you didn't notice. But they're actual fans, not all baby-t pink hat girls like a Wrigley and Fenway.

Things I didn't like:

1.  I won't belabor this point, but we obviously can't hit for any kind of power.  And going into the season, we knew we couldn't.

2.  Batting Aaron Rowand leadoff is still stupid.  Leadoff hitters need to get on base more than thirty percent of the time.  They do not need to lead the team in runs batted in.

3.  David Eckstein of the Padres.  If you're a real Giants fan older than 15, you hate him too.

4.  They ran out of every thing but extra large t-shirts for Korean Heritage Night.  Not to be racist (even though I am), but they need to make sure they are fully stocked on smaller sizes for the Asian Heritage nights.

5. The crab sandwiches, while good, are unbelievably expensive at $15 a pop.  That's a bit ridiculous.

6. Its widely agreed that Bengie Molina is the slowest player in baseball.  Well the way that hockey is faster in person is the same way that Molina is slower in person.

7.  I don't like how the seagulls start circling the stadium during the 8th inning of night games.  Its like they know, and it scares me.

8.  Grown men who get pro jersey's with their own last names on the back are losers.  I'm talking to you, Romero #17.

Random Things

1.  The SF, San Jose, and East Bay Gay Men's Choirs collaborated to sing a song from 'Rent' as well as the national anthem on Saturday.  They sang beautifully, but I think most of us were surprised by how fat they were.

2.  When the Gay Men's Choir (mentioned above) was on the field, they also had people with balloons set up like a big Jesus-fish on the field.  I was a little confused, and it took me a full seven minutes to figure out that it was actually an AIDS-ribbon.  But I didn't want to look stupid so I didn't say anything.  So don't tell anyone.

3.  There were not many Koreans there for Korean Heritage Night on Wednesday.  That's not good or bad, I just thought there would be more.

4.  At some point, I would like to get seats on the right field wall.  I think it would be pretty cool, but probably pretty cold.

5.  I've always wondered why they don't to variable pricing of concessions.  They could up the price of hot chocolate on cold nights, and raise the price of ice cream on hot days.  It's not the nicest thing to do, but I don't think it would cause a huge uproar.  It is worth it to keep Lincecum.

6.  I really like the idea of 'walk-up' or 'entrance' music.  I think we should incorporate it into more parts of our life.  In this day and age with portable music, it can be done I think.  I want mine to be the saxophone solo from 'Careless Whisper'.

7.  I went to eight games last year and saw the Giants hit two homers.  I've been to two this year and the Giants hit one.  So that's something.  I guess.

8.  The Astros are awful.  Like Warriors awful.  Awww... too soon?
