The Mets have Nothing to Lose
Written by Kerri Senno, Tuesday April 06 2010
Game one is over and only a meager 161 remain. The first at bat jitters are out, and the players can finally put the 2009 season behind them. The difference for the New York Mets this year is that everyone is counting them out early and often. This is strange, considering just last year, analysts were predicting that they would win the World Series. Now, with essentially the same team, except the addition of Jason Bay, they are said to be fighting for the basement with the Nationals.
The current Mets failed miserably in the bully role. They were embarrassed, defeated and shamed. The 2010 Mets have absolutely nothing to lose and everything in the world to prove to their critics. Perhaps this is the perfect balance for the underdog. (Who knew a team with such a huge payroll could be an underdog?) The Mets defeated the Marlins on opening day yesterday by a score of 7-1, with ace Johan Santana doing what he is paid to do.
Can we take much from the win considering Santana was on the mound and the Mets have the best Opening Day winning percentage of all time? Yes, because the difference for the avid Mets fan is the team chemistry and attitude. This is something that has been lacking for the past three seasons. The addition of Jeff Francoeur was a huge move, as he is an uplifting clubhouse guy.
David Wright hit a 2-run homerun to opposite field in the first inning, which was great for the psyche of a very mental guy. This matched his opposite field homeruns at Citi Field total from 2009. Jason Bay legged out a triple, Luis Castillo hustled down the line avoiding a double play, and the Mets aggressively ran the base paths causing a Marlin meltdown in the field.
Although the Mets had a quiet offseason besides Bay, new acquisitions Gary Matthews Jr. and Rod Barajas contributed both in the field and at the plate. All in all, it was a great win for the Mets, but there is a lot of baseball to be played, and four other suspect pitchers to count on. Regardless, it was refreshing to see the excitement of the players, to see the fundamentals, and to see a bunch of guys who genuinely look like they like each other.
Here’s to a 162-0 Season, let’s go Mets!

Enjoy the win and the positive attitude now Kerri. It won't last once Jose Reyes comes back. He is a clubhouse cancer that causes an uncontrolable urge to put personal goals and statistics before wins. I bet you can't wait to see him dancing around after he gets thrown out trying to steal a base or stretch a double into a triple to pad his stats.
