The Greatest NASCAR Fantasy League Ever

The 2009 NASCAR season brought about many changes for me, personally. It was the first year that I had a Twitter account, and began following action on and off the track via those feeds. It was really the first year where I had a full list of RSS feeds, to further keep up with all of the goings-on within the sport. I became a paid contributor to this website (thanks, Playerpress). I also became involved with a great raceday chat group, which is run by a fine gentleman by the name of Cooter. I actually wrote about this chat last year.
2009 also brought forth what could be (and in my opinion is) the greatest fantasy NASCAR game that has ever been created. A couple of our chat copatriots, Doug and Lee run this every week. It is not your typical fantasy league, where you pick drivers who you think will finish well each week. Oh no, it is the complete opposite from that. Thanks to Doug, we now have the NASCAR Fantasy Crash League. I sat out the entire 2009 season, and watched the kids have a blast with this. But now, in 2010, I am all in.
Basically, the NASCAR Fantasy Crash League works like this. First, take a look at the starting field for that week’s race. Peruse this list, and there are certain drivers that you notice tend to do very poorly each week. You know who these guys are (cough::MENARD::cough).
So, do a bit of research, and apply that research to the following rules:
1) Pick 1 driver who you think will be the first person to crash in the race
One driver to wreck them all. You make this first pick on who will crash first. Now, even if four drivers are involved in the first wreck of the race, if you pick one of them, you get 50 points.
2) Pick 5 drivers who you think will crash at some point during the race
Yes, any 5 drivers that could wreck at any point during the race. You make these 5 picks, and you receive 10 points for each of these drivers that wreck during the race. Plus, if the driver you picked for the first crasher wrecks at any other point during the race, you receive 10 points for that driver as well.
3) Pick 1 driver who you think will finish in 43rd place
Each week, we will see the regular start-and-parkers, the guys who qualify for the race, but only have enough money for one set of tires and a tank of gas. Pick the guy who you think will finish dead last, and you receive 25 points.
Of course, there is a caveat with this. If any of the 7 drivers that you pick happen to finish in the top 5 for the race, then you have 5 points deducted for each driver you picked who finishes in the top 5. Brutal.
If you go to the NASCAR Fantasy Crash League Rules page, you can find anything you need to know about the game, including where to post your weekly picks, and a decent FAQ. Then, follow along with our chats or check in with the website once a week for an update on points. Points accumulate throughout the season, so there is a final champion at season’s end.
Simple, right? So, get off your rear, and get your crash picks in! I am headed to do that myself right now.
