The End of a Legend

“The Iceman” Chuck Liddell didn’t look 40 years old at the start of the fight Saturday night at UFC 115 in Vancouver as his vicious right hand everyone in the UFC fears landedAP Photo / Darryl Dyck and seemed to rattle Rich Franklin.  Liddell also showed his leg striking power with somevery solid leg kicks and one in particular that broke the left arm of Franklin 1:02 into the first round.  However all great things must come to an end and that is what the UFC fans seen as a devastating right hand from Franklin landed flush and knocked out Liddell with five seconds left in the 1st round and with that right hand may have ended a Legendary MMA career for “The Iceman” as Liddell has now lost five of his last six fights.

A career that had so many highs may have ended Saturday night in ugly fashion.  Many athletes don’t leave their respective sport on their terms and Liddell is just another name on a long list of athletes who head into the sunset at their lowest point of their career.  Liddell’s storybook career will be remembered for all of his amazing KO‘s, however on this night the only thing people will remember is seeing the man who was once the most feared striker in the sport laying their bleeding and unable to get up.

This is not the way many wanted to see Chuck Liddell’s career end, but many seen it coming as he hasn’t been the feared “Iceman” for some time.  It’s not the way a great career should have ended, but it did.  Now let’s all forget this night as soon as we can and from now on when Chuck Liddell’s name is talked about let’s focus on the greatness, because Liddell will go down as one of the greatest in MMA history and that is how we should all remember him!
