‘The Colts Rule’: Week 17 changed to divisional games only
Written by MegAnne, Wednesday March 24 2010
As an avid Colts fan, you may remember my displeasure with coach Jim Caldwell’s decision to sit the starters and end the perfect season Indianapolis had 14 games into the 2009 season. My displeasure, it seems, is reflected in NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and the Competition Committee’s discussions to move more divisional games to the final weeks of regular season play.
After clinching home field advantage throughout the playoffs, Indy sat Peyton Manning and much of the starting lineup to rest the players for their post season bid for the Super Bowl. By playing the Colts’ second and third string, the New York Jets were, in part, able to capture a berth in the playoffs.
“One of the key things we’re doing in the short term is in our scheduling. We’re trying to schedule, potentially, Week 17 will be all division opponents. And maybe even a large part of Week 16.
“So we think that will address this to some extent. It will not necessarily eliminate the issue but the Competition Committee - and I’ve stressed to them - we need to continue to look at this because it’s important to the quality of what we do, the integrity of our game.”
Though Goodell is correct in stating that week 17 would remain all but irrelevant to many teams, the change would ensure that every team would play divisional opponents in the final week, bringing more purpose to the season’s last match ups and more excitement to the fans.
