The 2009 Disappoint-Mets

When Sports Illustrated named the New York Mets the projected World Series Champions, Mets fans everywhere cringed. Sports fans are all aware of the Sports Illustrated curse, but the 2009 Mets have given this curse a whole new meaning.

Since the start of the season, the Mets have lost their Starting Shortstop, their Starting Third Basemen, their Starting First Baseman, their Starting Centerfielder. They have traded their opening day Right Fielder. Their starting catcher, set up man, backup shortstop, number three and four pitchers, backup centerfielder and leftfielder have all spent significant time on the Disabled List. It is absolutely unbelievable.

Sports Illustrated was not crazy, though. If the New York Mets had all stayed healthy, they would certainly have a shot at the National League East. Rotowire listed 2009 Projected Stats for all Major League players before the start of the season, and here is what the Mets opening day lineup was SUPPOSED to achieve:

The highlighted names represent opening day starters that are on the Mets current 25-man roster. Below is a chart that represents these same stats, except expressed by the current Mets lineup:

Finally, it is unfair to compare the current Mets lineup to the projected, because afterall those starters did play a few games. Of 117 Games, Jose Reyes has played 36 games, Delgado, 26, and Carlos Beltran has played 62. The projected Mets team ranked top 10 in most stats, while the actual Mets team has failed mightily:

In case you did not know, there are 30 teams in the Major Leagues. The Mets are dead last in homeruns.

Please, Don't even get me started on how much money goes to waste on players that aren't producing. My Cubbies have the most disappointing lineup in the league in '09. (but yes, your Mets are terrible too).

Kerri, you unusual objectivity as a New York fan is why I enjoy reading your articles. You must not be a native New Yorker.

No kidding. They're impossible to watch/root for. If changes are not made for next season, they will not see my season ticket money. I know this will hurt them greatly, right up there with Madoff. At least we're on the same page here.

Oh well now you've gone and hurt my feelings Kerri. OK, I'm over it. The Mets don't have a shot because they are a bunch of gutless chokers. How bad was that play (or NON-play) by Castillo last night in not covering 2nd with 2 outs? It led to 5 runs and a loss. There is an entire culture of choking loser behavior on the whole team. The Mets need to blow up the entire roster, coaching staff and front office and start over from scratch. Maybe by then the Phils run of Championships will be over. Maybe.....

Hmm...I believe all I said was "If the Mets stayed healthy, they would have had A SHOT at the NL East." I'm not talking about the Phillies at all in my article, nor do I care about their injuries. The Phillies are a better team, DUHHHHHHHHHHH, everyone knows this. I was simply displaying the curse of the 2009 Mets.

Puh-Leeze! The Mutts didn't have any injuries when they Choked the last two years did they? They would have found a way to choke again this year, if they were even in the race. The Phillies are so much better than the Mets it's not even close. Everybody has injuries too. Phils lost Jimmy Rollins, Pedro Feliz, Tom Gordon and Brad Lidge for part of the 2008 season. SPs Brett Myers and Adam Eaton got demoted to the minors. And Utley played most of the year with a hip injury that sidelined A-Roid for two months. And they STILL won the World Series. The Mets just don't have the character to be winners and it shows every game.

Redding was supposed to be their number 5 starter and he started on the DL. Also don't forget Castillo and Church missed time. As did the backups to the backups: Niese, Nieve, F-Mart, and Ramon Martinez.
