Texans land a key MNF game with 2009 schedule

Greg Shelley Written by Greg Shelley, Wednesday April 15 2009

The 2009 schedule is out, and the Texans have lots to look forward to this season.

The 2009 schedule is out, and the Texans have another Monday Night Football The Houston Texansgame to play.  Week 11’s game will be against the Tennessee Titans, and all Texans’ fans are hoping to be in a playoff hunt when it rolls around.  As John McClain pointed out in his article today, the fact that the Titans are celebrating their AFL heritage which began in Houston as the Oilers, will definitely add some fuel to the passion of the Texans fans at Reliant.  Last year’s MNF game for the Texans resulted in a 30-17 thumping of the Jacksonville Jaguars.  The Texans also beat the Titans in their last meeting.

The Texans will be playing the NFC West this year, and they have experienced some relative success against the NFC recently, finishing last year with a 3-1 record against NFC teams.  Houston will also get a chance to avenge their late season loss to the Raiders last year, which broke up a chance at a 6-game win streak and a winning record.  Regardless, the Texans closed the last six games with a nice 5-1 record, which should help build momentum going into the 2009 season.

Free agency has also brought about some additional promise for the Texans, particularly with the addition of DE Antonio Smith to complement Mario Williams, and DT Shaun Cody.  Houston also has a good chance of gaining some additional momentum with the draft at the end of next week.  They will be picking 15th in the first round, unless they make a deal sometime before then.  For what it’s worth, many sports fans are predicting the Texans will take Clay Matthews (LB) from USC with their first pick.  With the team’s need for some additional outside help in the linebacking corps and the fact that Gary Matthews (Clay’s uncle) is now on the staff, Clay seems to be a good fit.

At any rate, the promising finish to last year’s season, combined with all the changes on defense make for a very promising and exciting 2009 season.  With three of the first four games at home, the Texans have the potential to break into a 9-win season this year, but only time will tell if they have what it takes to turn the bigger corner and break into the playoffs.  Personally, I want to believe that they do.
