T.O is Paying Off the Bills

All you people who said the Buffalo Bills were stupid to sign Terrell Owens were completely wrong.

Not only is T.O. a star wide receiver, but he's also exactly what a team like the Bills need.  What they need is an attraction.  Someone that the fans want to see.  Someone that the fans will pay to see.  Someone to help them make the playoffs for the first time in nine years.  Someone that will attract attention from opposing teams.  Someone to excite the local and national media.  T.O. has delivered on all fronts.

You don't need to look any further than the NFL schedule to realize that Bill's owner Ralph Wilson has already gotten his money's worth.  You see, the Buffalo Bills will be playing on Monday Night Football against the New England Patriots in week 1.  Think that would have happened if T.O. wasn't on the team?  Not a chance in hell.  Then later in the season they have another prime time game in December.  They get a Thursday night game on the NFL Network.  That's two prime time games for the Buffalo Bills.  That hasn't happened since the days of Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed.  So T.O. has already helped the image of the team and he hasn't even played a down yet.  And that's just the beginning.

T.O. is starring in his own reality series on VH1, which will increase the exposure of the Buffalo Bills.  Even if the show is a complete train-wreck (I hope), it will be good advertisement for the Bills.  You can't begin to calculate the number of T.O. #81 Bills jerseys that show alone will sell.  And T.O. was just given the key to the city by the mayor of Buffalo.  I'm not sure who would want the key to the city of Buffalo, but that's a pretty big indication that the fans there are ready to embrace him.  As an Eagles fan I can tell you that the same exact thing happened here in Philadelphia.  T.O. came in and took over the town.  He was a star from the very first practice and the fans all chanted his name.  He was the most popular player on the team by far, which didn't sit well with the overly sensitive QB.  He helped the team to it's only Super Bowl appearance of the Andy Reid era and he sure as hell wasn't the one who was throwing up on the field during the 4th quarter when the game could have been won.  T.O. got greedy and selfish and the whole thing blew up in Philly (remember the interview in his driveway while he was doing sit-ups?  Classic), but it was worth it to make that Super Bowl run.

I'm not saying that T.O. is going to lead the Bills to the Super Bowl, but he will make them better on the field and a national story off it.  In the NFL, image is almost as important as actual ability and results.  Think I'm wrong?  Then please explain to me the popularity of Dallas Cowboys QB, Tony Romo.  The next playoff game that choker wins will be his first, yet the national media fawns all over him.

Owens is already the most popular player on the Bills.  Just the other day he took over the job of a local sportscaster on the Channel 7 News in Buffalo.  He reported on his first day of practice, introduced an interview of his favorite player, himself naturally, and he even did a roundup of the rest of the night in sports.  He seemed right at home in front of the cameras.  I think he's trying out for a certain initialed network after his playing days are over.  Hey if Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith can get jobs as sports broadcasters anyone can do it right?

And those who think T.O. is done obviously haven't watched him play or checked the stats.  Yes, he's older and on the downside of his career at age 35, but he's far from done.  He had 69 receptions for 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns last year.  What team in the NFL couldn't use a receiver who puts up those kind of numbers?  I'm sure some of you will say the Cowboys, since they just cut him.  My response to that is that they cut him to shake things up.  Teams need to do that when it's been over a decade since their last playoff victory.  Somebody had to be the scapegoat and Jerry Jones couldn't blame his overpriced, over-hyped, choker of a QB now could he?  Of course not, Romo's dating a semi-celebrity and the idiots in the media think he's actually a good QB.  Dallas needs it's "stars" to keep the star in the national spotlight.  Winning is almost secondary.

I wish the Eagles had paid the man what he wanted and T.O. was still in Philadelphia.  Some people think I'm crazy, but if it's crazy to enjoy a Super Bowl run, then call me crazy.  I just want to win.

T.O. performs on the field.  He is never in any trouble off the field (unless you count that one little incident where he may or may not have tried to commit suicide).  He keeps himself in great shape.  He wants nothing more than to win.  And he's a good teammate (for a year or so).

Yes, I know he's crazy.  But for the first year on a team he's always on his best behavior.  That's what the Buffalo Bills are going to get this year.  They are going to get a Hall of Fame WR, who still has plenty left in the tank and is motivated to prove the naysayers wrong.  And he only signed a one-year deal with the Bills, so he's also playing for another contract.  There simply is no downside here.

He's already won over the fans of the Buffalo Bills.  He's already won over the media.  And he's already provided a return on the investment that the Bills made in him by getting them the national exposure, in the form of a Monday Night Football game and a Thursday night game, that they so desperately need.  The people who said that Buffalo was wrong to sign T.O. have to admit that they were the ones who were wrong now.  They have T.O.  I mean, they have to.

Hey B-Dub aka Rude McAsshole, I was able to read your article (barely, since your obnoxious "think you know EVERYTHING" perspective is painful) and decided to give my insight... but I guess you just want the last word since you think you're god or something.

Dave, TO is always well-behaved in year one with a new team and he only signed a one-year contract. There simply is no downside for the Bills.

Jill, the point of the article, if you were able to read, was that T.O. is delivering a huge return on the investment that the Bills made. I admit that he's on the downside of his career, but he made the Bills money by getting them national exposure and he WILL help them win some games.

T.O. is past his prime, hence the move to Buffalo. No championship runs in his future.

It must be your drinking then Jim. Maybe you missed the Eagles with TO dominating the NFL all year. Maybe you missed the fact that because of TO the Eagles had homefield advantage throughout the playoffs that year. Maybe you missed the fact that they rolled the Vikings. Maybe you missed the fact that because TO got them homefield advantage, that the Falcons, and Michael Vick especially, QUIT before they even got off the bus for the NFC Championship game. Vick even admitted to letting the bitter cold effect him. (I was in the stands and can tell you it was the coldest game I can ever remember) Maybe you missed TO being the best player on the field during the Super Bowl too. He was the only WR tall enough to reach all of McNabb's high throws and agile enough to reach down for all his "worm'burners". So yeah Jimbo, it's YOU!

TO helped the Eagles to the Super Bowl? It may be all that Jameson I drink, but didn't Owens miss all the playoff games before the Super Bowl? Again, it may be all the Jameson but how many championship rings does TO have? Bueller?
