SF Giants Power Rankings!!

Big Poppa TC Written by Big Poppa TC, Thursday June 04 2009

We are nearly a third of way through the baseball season, and the Giants are still right around .500, which is still a pleasant surprise.  So this seems like a fabulous time for TC’s SF Giants Power Rankings.  So I will rank all of the Giants in terms of their awesomeness right now.

1.        Tim Lincecum, SP – The Franchise, the CY Young winner, the future.  And he gets paid $650K this year, great value.

2.       Randy Johnson, SP – He’s just became the 24th player to get 300 wins, and he’s very tall.  He used to have a mullet.

3.       Matt Cain, SP – He’s big, he’s young, and he’s pitching well despite not getting run support.  So it’s the same as last year.

4.       Brian Wilson, RP – He’s an All-star Closer.  Yes he’s more exciting than is healthy for one’s heart, but he’s good at closing.  And he’s better at his job than most of the other Giants are at doing their jobs.

5.       Jeremy Affeldt, RP – He has been our most reliable reliever this year (and a lefty to boot!), and one of the few reasonable free agent signings in recent Giant history.

6.       Zach Grienke, SP – He’s still sooooo gooood that he’s more valuable to the Giants than most of the actual Giants, even though he’s on the Royals.

7.       Barrack Zito, SP – Don’t tell anyone, but Zito is a legit number two starter this year.  Just that the Giants don’t have a legit lineup so you don’t notice.

8.       Jonathon Sanchez, SP – Sanchez has control issues, but has crazy good stuff and would be worth more in a trade than any batter on the Giants not named Buster Posey.

9.       Megan Fox, FOX – She is out of this world hot, although just a little bit odder looking than before.  Has anyone else noticed this?  Maybe I’m crazy.

10.   Aaron Rowand, CF – I’m as shocked by this position as anyone, but Rowand has been killing it since being moved to the leadoff position.  Any offense looks pretty good on the Giants.

11.   Bengie Molina, C – Big Money has been terrible lately, dropping his average by 70 points in the last three weeks.  But with the Sandoval injury and general ineptness of the Giant lineup, he’s still our best offensive hope.

12.   Pablo Sandoval, 1B/3B/C – Little Panda has an injured elbow which could force a permanent move away from third base where he was a good defender (too bad).  The only everyday Giant hitting over .300.

13.   Randy Winn, RF – Plays a fantastic right field, he’s got some speed, and provides some veteran leadership.  Not a great hitter anymore, but who is? (sense a theme about the hitters yet?)

14.   Kruk(ow) and Kuip(er) – These guys are fantastic.  Really.  Listen to broadcasts from other teams and come back and tell me.

15.   Emmanuel Burriss, 2B – Speedy, good second baseman.  He has turned into a player who I’m not embarrassed about.

16.   Travis Ishikawa, 1B – I have absolutely destroyed Ishikawa in past columns (even though I like him, and I know he’s young and can get better).  But the truth is he’s is the team’s best fielder and is actually a great hitter at home.  But he can’t be started on the road to his .077 batting average.

17.   Juan Uribe, Util – An average utility infielder with a decent batting average.

18.   Brian Medders , RP– Second most reliable reliever, and delivers some long relief.

19.   Andres Torres, PR – Great pinch runner.

20.   Buster Posey, C – One of the top prospects in the country.

21.   John Baumgartner, SP – One of the top pitching prospects in the country.

22.   Merkin Valdez, RP – Not great lately, but still ok.

23.   Will Clark, 1B – My favorite Giant of all time by far.

24.   Manny Pacquiao, Boxing Champion – He packed out AT&T like no other.  (If the A’s signed him and moved the team to Fremont, they’d have more money than the Yankees.)

25.   Justin Miller, RP – He doesn’t suck, I like him more in long relief.

26.   Bruce Bochy, MGR – He’s an ok coach.  The Giants wouldn’t have gone to the World Series this year with Joe Torre anyways.

27.   Fred Lewis, LF – Has the tools, but is getting worse as time passes.  And he’s an atrocious left fielder (compared to Barry Bonds!).

28.   Willie Mays, CF – Tell your kids about him, its important.

29.   Barry Bonds, LF – Say what you want, I like him.

30.   Nate Schierholz, PH – I thought he would be better (don’t know why I thought that, the Giants don’t develop bats).

31.   Edgar Renteria, SS – He’s not a good defender, can’t hit, and costs a lot (aka Bizarro triple crown).

44.  Tyler Walker, RP – He was the terrible setup man from last year which forced the team to overpay for Bob Howry.

45.  Bob Howry, RP – He’s as bad as Tyler Walker but costs more.

57.  Brian Sabean, GM – His time has passed.  Hasn’t made a good move in a long time.

85.  Rich Aurilia, 1B – Unwatchable, automatic out.  Should not be in the majors.

Anyone current I’ve forgotten can be stuck between Bob Howry and Brian Sabean.  Any other classic Giants you like can be put in right after Edgar Rentaria.

Kruk and Kuip KILL the A's duo of Glen Kuiper and Ray Fosse. I'm glad I don't get the new CSN channel, so I don't have to listen to Fosse cry about everything. Zito has his game working again. Maybe not $126 mil. worth, but he's having a good year for sure. I think he might finally be over the pressure of his contract and realized he can let the hitters put the ball in play and the park will take care of the rest. I'd like to put Kevin Mitchell on the list. Any guy who can make a bare-handed catch and kill his girlfriend's cat with those same hands deserves to be ranked higher than Sabean and Aurilia.

Yes it's Madison Bumgarner. There was a guy I went to college named John Baumgartner. Sorry. And Cain can win the Cy Young if Lincecum did last year. But I think for now i'd still pick Santana in the NL.

I love talkin' baseball, and like you Tiger, I could do it all day too. When I was a video game tester for the NFL 2k6 video game, we used to talk sports all day while playing the video game, but since then, I got no one. I'm not tryin to toot my own horn here, but I just don't know very many people who have as much knowledge about the game of baseball and the Giants as I do. Even if they disagree with me, anyone who can hold an INTELLIGENT conversation about baseball is okay in my book. I'm tellin' you, one bat gives us a chance at the division crown, and anything can happen in the playoffs. Two bats gives us a shot at the NLCS and a thrid bat gives us legitamate World Series thoughts. Too bad Sabean can't sack up and land a big fish. His right hand man for a few years in SF, Ned Coletti, who is now the Dodgers GM, is doing a MUCH better job at putting a winning team together.

Okay gotcha. I see what the situation with them is now and it sucks that my former fave player Zito (starting to come back around to him) is the run-support less man this year. And I think it's pretty funny how me and you can talk Giants baseball all day man. I'm a die-hard baseball fan so I'm guessing the people making giant blogs are gonna love us for sure.

Fred Lewis (LF) and Travis Ishikawa (1B) are the two glaring problems right now. Send them down to get their sh!t straight, and bring up John Bowker (1B) and someone else. I'm not saying Bowker is the answer at 1B, but he couldn't play much worse than Ishi is. Scheirholtz can play everyday in RF and move Winn to LF. Burress is improving, which is great, because he's like the poor man's Jose Reyes w/o the power. Cain is getting run support this year, after getting ZERO last year. Zito is the guy who is getting NO help this year, and he is pitching much, much better. The Giants biggest problem of all is not the lack of power, or under-achieving yougsters, but the all-important hit with runners in scoring position. Their team average is just that, average, but the runs scored is pathetic (last still?). A couple bats, or even one bat with 10-20 HRs and 30-50 RBIs to finish the year would win a good 10+ more games that we wouldn't with the current lineup. Not to mention it would change the way teams attack the entire lineup. I'm still angry we didn't offer Dunn or Crede a contract... Neither are making HUGE money either...

Question Giant faithful, what's up with Lewis? I mean it seems the Giants always have these young players where I'm thinking oh they are gonna be good but because i don't see games (Naturally, AL Central, Living in Michigan) I read about these guys and they just blow. I mean I like Cain and Lincecum but geez these guys need some offensive assistance, especially Cain.

If Jonathan Sanchez could find the plate with any consistency, he'd be very good. His stuff is nasty, but just too inconsitent to get any real value for him right now. I think they are hoping he picks his game up in the next month or so, so they can get a little more value for him at the trade deadline. He has two things on his side for sure though, he's young and cheap. They also have another stud lefty in the minors who is supposed to be the real deal. The Giants need a 1B or 3B most of all, and maybe a corner outfielder if someone wants to take Fred Lewis, or Randy Winn's big contract. I hope the Giants are players at the trade deadline, but with Sabean's track record, I don't expect much. I don't want some dude who is a free agent at the end of the year either. Picky, picky, I know, but I like the young base we have, we just need a few hitters and we'll be dangerous. Cain and Lincecum are the only two untouchable guys on the Giants, everyone else is fair game for a trade in my book.

I mean Megan Fox is a good future prospect I think But did you hear about avril lavinge throwing out the first pitch for the jay's this week? They say shes a hard throwing righty who breast were hanging out during the pitch. LOL...And Travis may be a good player if he can get over his Fergie-Disease.

I think Sanchez has some pretty good stuff, but it seems like they are always trying to unload him. What do the Giants want in return for Jonathan Sanchez, and do you think this will ever come into fruition?

TC, still lovin' your work, keep it up man. Kruk and Kuip should be way higher on this list, right after all five starting pitchers maybe, so should Megan Fox. Oh, and isn't it Madison Bumgarner, not John Baumgartner? Maybe I'm wrong. And Renteria, at least he hits when guys are on base/in scoring position. "Clutch" is what he is, otherwise, useless. Cain for NL Cy Young? 7-1 with 2.27 ERA? On a team with ZERO offense? Waddya think?
