David Beckham. What are we going to do with him? He came to America, thinking he was going to be the savior for American soccer, or maybe it was the $250 million thrown at him by the LA Galaxy. Now, after being ‘on loan’ to AC Milan, he wants out of America. Fine by me, I never wanted him here anyway.
Soccer is, shall I say, not the most popular sport here in the States. In general, the American public favors a high-scoring game, a contest with lots of action and excitement, like the NFL or NBA. Soccer just doesn’t bring that level of exhilaration that we are looking for. I sure don’t want to sit down and watch guys run up and down a field kicking a ball back and forth, attempting maybe 2 or 3 shots on goal per game. If someone scores, consider yourself lucky, 1-0 is a high scoring affair in futbol. At least in low-scoring hockey there are fights and body checks into a wall. In soccer, all you get is a slide tackle, and most of the time, it’s a flop, and what’s more is they are worse than Vlade Divac at it! Then the player proceeds to lay on the ground writhing in pain like he has just been picked off by a sniper in the stands.
I’ve heard set pieces are one of the most important parts of soccer. That is debatable, but more importantly, if you have a player on your team who excels in those situations, like David Beckham, he is a valuable commodity. Not many people can ‘bend it like Beckham.’ I’m sure there are many things he can do on the field that make him a wanted man, but to us here in America, it’s still just soccer. So I propose a trade to AC Milan. We will trade you David Beckham for a 10 pizzas, a big pot of spaghetti, 2 Ferrari’s, a Lamborghini, and Alyssa Milano... I want the spaghetti.
