S.F. Giants--Trade Deadline Deals...No Thanks, We're Good!
Written by T Reginald Sykes, Monday July 19 2010
Tonight, the San Francisco Giants ride into Chavez Ravine as one of baeball's hottest teams during July.
They've won 10 of he 15 games played this month and sit a slim half-game behind Colorado and Cincinnati, who lead the Wild-Card race.
The biggest problem San Francisco has had is winning within their own division and tnight would be great time to reverse that season-long trend. At 9-20, the Giants have the worst divisional record of any Major League team over .500.
After three games in Los Angeles, they play a four-game series in Arizona. This is a very important week for San Francisco. They would like to shave some of San Diego's lead ovr the which is currently only 4.5 games.
But, as the July 31 trade deadline approaches, San Francisco appears to be targeted by every also-ran wth a slugger. The Giants have a fully loaded minor league system and itwould seem like they are still in need of a bigbat.
Milwuakee's Cory Hart, Washington's Adam Dunn and Derek Lee of the Chicago Cubs are the names most mentioned in San Francisco' rumor mill.
However, his may bethe only time San Francisco's best move would b no move at all. At least not as far as trading prospects.
The Giants have a log jam at every position now. It sems as if the team has een building from within over a period of several weeks. They picked up outfielder Pat Burrell from the scrap heap and have now added southpaw Dontrell Willis.
In May, they also added Freddie Sanchez, whom they traded for last season. In June, the future has rrived early as prospects Buster Posey and Madison Bumgarner hve come to the majors--likely for good this time.
Forgotten first baseman Travis Ishikawa has begun starting games and adding a spark to the lineup.
Also they traded catcher Bengie Mola for relief pitcher Chris Ray, whse pitche brilliantly. If the team needs to make any other moves, the only one that would make sense would be to recall speedster Eugenio Valez from Triple-A.
The result of this would mean shipping a pitcher to the minors. The Giants have eight relievers and not one of them deserves to be demoted to Triple-A. But one of them will have to go. If Willis turns out to have a good mini-run in the minors, he will be called up because they have yet to replace lefty Dan Runzler with another southpaw.
So for all of the fans who want to see trades made, look around the league. The Giants don't need to make one.
For allof the GMs wanting to unload an over priced slugger...No thank you...We're good.
The Giants sould not even entertain the thought of trading a starting pitcher. Let's mae it clear that the "Big Five" is not to be dismantled. Any suitors for trade talk should know that they cannothave Tim Lincecum, Barry Zito, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanhez or Madison Bumgarner.
No, Milwuakee! We don't need Corey Hart or Phil Collins or Peter Cetera. THe Giants should stand pat.
