S.F. Giants--Still In Race Despite Fans, Media
Written by T Reginald Sykes, Friday August 21 2009
As we enter this weekend's critical series in Denver, the San Francisco Giants are poised to take back the Wild Card lead.
The players probably think so.
It's too bad the local media and their fans have already thrown in the towel.
At least that's what it sounds like if you listen to sports radio. A two-game deficit is too overwhelming to overcome with this team's anemic offense. There are too many teams to beat out. This pitching staff can't carry the Giants into the post-season.
I have heard it all and Iv'e heard enough.
Here's a message to Giant fans and local sports media personnel...Shut the @%#& up.
You're beginning to sound not only spoiled, but stupid beyond belief. Not to mention disloyal.
This is a team that has been among the league's best throughout this entire season and are showing no signs of letting up.
It's not like we are the '27 Yankees but we certainly aren't the '62 Mets.
True, the Giants are not a homerun hitting machine and they've had struggles on the road. But, looking around the National League, you'll find that every team is having issues that are keeping them from taking over this Wild-Card thing.
And let's not lose sight of the the fact that the Dodgers are looking back in their rear-view mirror, too.
I've heard at least two members of the ESPN Network say that the both Colorado and San Francisco will probably catch the Dodgers before the middle of September.
The Mets have been devastated by injuries, Florida is not playing like they were a few weeks ago, Chicago and Milwaukee have faded out of the picture and Atlanta is just now coming to life.
That being stated, Florida and Atlanta are less than a handful of games off the Wild-Card lead, too. This is a race and it's not supposed to be a runaway.
The Giants are right where they need to be and it's too bad that our own fans and media are the only ones who don't believe it.
August end next week, fans and being in the thick of it should be good enough reason to feel great about this team's chances.
So while you complain to KNBR and lament what might have been, I'll be trying to get playoff tickets. Let the rats abandon ship and the real fans bask in the glory of what is a great season.

I second that TRS. I think we have as good a shot as anyone if we play in a decent size park. We struggle in the sandboxes that are homerun parks but not singles/doubles parks. The Giants have 10 games in the next month against these Rockies, 6 of which are at home, so even a 3-1 series loss this time around isn't devastating.
