Rolling with the Tides
Written by Chriso, Tuesday August 11 2009
So I spent yesterday, my 40th birthday, riding the waves at Virginia Beach. Then we went out to watch the Norfolk Tides play a AAA game.
As Paul Simon would sing "Yesterday it was my birthday, I hung one more year on the line, I should be depressed, my life's a mess, but I'm having a good time..."
OK, my life's not a complete mess, just cruising around Virginia and looking for work. But it was my birthday, and I definitely wanted to go down to the beach. Now I'm not talking about surfing, because I think at 40 it's important to know your limits. I had my final attempt at downhill skiing last January. But boogie boarding is just fine, it's kind of like playing kickball instead of baseball.
But while my life is not a mess, my team, the Boston Red Sox, are completely floundering (a bit like me in the waves). Then, I got to read this post from the Yankee fan on the site. I thought the title was interesting "The Evil Empire Strikes Back". Isn't it bad when you know you're the evil one? Also, a bit of economics, when you outspend everyone else, you are supposed to win more than the other teams (of course, the season series is at 8-4). And how about winning a World Series once in the past 8 years with all of that payroll? Oh wait, it's hard to win the Series without a playoff appearance in 2008.
But that wouldn't ruin my birthday. Also, the Red Sox beat the Tigers, the Blue Jays beat the Yankees, and I was at the Norfolk Tides game watching them play.... the Yankees. I know the baseball gods must have some sense of humor, putting me at a AAA Yankees game. And there were plenty of minor league Yankee fans. One of the odd things from the night was the Tides bat boy. We were calling him Grandpa, I'm just guessing he was about 70 and easily the oldest bat boy I have ever seen. But the night at the ballpark was a great success, save for the fact that the Yankees rolled over the Tide, 6-1.
And just in case you were wondering, we closed out the evening with an appearance at the Sandbridge Island open mic. Just had to get my mind off the Yankees....
