Red Sox Banking Season on Aquisitions

The Red Sox have done a lot this offseason, but have they Really? We won't know until the season, but we can guess.

The Red Sox first tried to compensate for not signing Jason Bay by accuiring Jeremy Hermeida and Mike Cameron. There are two major flaws with this plan. One is that Mike Cameron is not Jason Bay. He is a better defensive player, but he is not going to come close to Jason Bay's offensive numbers. Also, Jeremy Hermeida has played well, but has not really proved that  he is a starter on a championship calibar team. Even if he plays well, Hermeida is only going to be a journeymen.

Also, the starting rotation is injury prone. John Lackey has been injured as a member of the Angels and Diasuke was injured last season. However the Sox do have Clay Bucholtz, so as long as only one starter goes down the Sox should be fine, but if two go down the Sox may be in trouble. Even more trouble if Tampa Bay stays in the division and wild card races. The Red Sox should be okay if Josh Beckett pitches like he did in 2007 and if only one starter went down.

Also, Bill Hall and Marco Scutaro were signed to sure up the infield. Bill Hall is a good offensive contributer and I think that it's a good pick up. Scutaro is a mistake because Alex Gonzalez is one of  the best defensive shortstops in the game and the Sox need defense to succeed. Scutaro has never really been on a good team , so there is no way to tell if he can play under pressure. What do you do with Mike Lowell? He was a good player, but his time is over. You can't trade him because he can't pass a physical. The Sox should release him and retire Tony C's number. It's long overdue.

The Sox should contend and make the playoffs, but will they beat the Yankees and win the World Series? Only time will tell.

I believe that the Sox will be far superior defensively than they were last season. Marco Scutaro was actually a better shortstop than Alex Gonzalez was last year and the numbers prove it. In fact Alex's range factor was the 4th worse amongst staring qualifying shortstops. The acquisition of Bill Hall would be good if he could hit above .210, he may not make the 25 man roster unless they trade Lowell or Jed Lawrie. The pitching will be better because Daisuke Matsuzaka and John Lackey are healthy.

Your'e right Chriso Lowell still can be possibly used. I overlooked that in my article.

Having Cameron instead of Bay is a clear move that the Sox are hoping pitching and defense will make a difference, also it is shown in not having Lowell at 3rd, but Lowell still could be used if Ortiz struggles at DH
