Rangers and Cowboys are Polar Opposites

Who would have thought that in late October the talk of the DFW Metroplex would be the Texas Rangers. That, however is exactly what you hear when walking the streets downtown, chatting it up with the locals at a sports bar, or tuning in to the local radio talk shows. For as long as i can remember the Cowboys have always dominated the sports discussions in Dallas at this time of year, but that my friends has now changed.

The Texas Rangers are the exact opposite of the Dallas Cowboys and that is the reason why they are having the type of success they are. Disagree, look no further than the head of each organization. Nolan Ryan is a Hall of Fame pitcher who knows the in and outs about the game but chooses to let his coaches do their jobs. He doesn't interfere with the way Ron Washington runs his ballclub and this "hands off" approach has proven to be work perfectly for the Rangers.

Jerry Jones on the other hand runs his team a different way. He runs the Cowboys like a dictatorship in which his players and coaches must answer to him. Operating this way has caused his players to perceive coach Wade Phillips as nothing more than a puppet. Mr. Jones is also proving to the country that his knowledge of building a championship team is withering away from year to year.

Ron Washington exudes confidence and excitement in his players while Wade Phillips players seem to play with a lack of leadership and discipline. The Cowboys make the same mistakes game after game and continue to hurt themselves in doing so. Teams definitely do take on the characteristics of the head coach and both the Rangers and Cowboys show this to be true in different ways.

Finally, the players themselves seem to carry themselves in a  very different light. Cliff Lee, Michael Young, and Josh Hamilton have become the leaders of the Rangers ballclub and have done a great job in doing so. They are the guys who have stepped up during tough situations and carried the team to a victory. The Cowboys' record will tell you that they are lacking those type of players. Tony Romo brings his level of play down when the game is on the line and no other player has shown any kind of leadership on the field during the first five games of the season.

As a Dallas Native, i am proud to have an organization representing the city and state in such a positive way. We have a bunch of guys who play hard the entire game and never give up. We have a coach who brings out the best in his players and motivates them to succeed. We also have a man in the front office who has built a championship level team and puts his ego aside and makes decisions based on the well-being of the franchise. It is a shame the Cowboys will continue to fall on their face as they continue to do things their way and not the "Rangers way."
