Poker gets a Stimulus Package
Written by Johnny Leopard, Saturday May 30 2009
In a bad economy the big corporations have been getting bailouts left and right. Places like AIG, GM, and many others. The WSOP of poker is now offering a stimulus package.
The 4th event of the WSOP will be a No-Limit Hold-em event with a buy in of only $1,000. The event was in such high demand that the tournament offcials actually had to turn people away. This event is expected to be the largest event (excluding the main event) in WSOP history. This will be a two day, day one event, meaning a group of players will play in the tournament on day 1A and the rest will play on day 1B with the survivoring players geting combined to meet on day 2. Usually this set-up only happens during the main event.
let me put this into perspective, the WSOP is turning people away! A leauge that makes it's money out of other people losing there money, and so many people have signed up that they can't take anymore people. This hasn't happened since 2007 when there was a freezeout in a 7card stud High-Low 8 or better, when it attractred around 700 people, which is huge for a 7 card stud tournament which usually only attracts around 300-400 people.
In 2006 there was a freezeout in a No-Limit Hold-em tournament that attracted nearly 3,000 people. Since the poker boom in 2003 the WSOP has only grown in size and this new Stimulus tournament has already reached and passed the 3,000 player mark.
The WSOP hopes to bring in more people and more viewers by making the field bigger and cheaper, while this is great news for all you hopefulls out there, this is dreadful news for all pros looking to chase history. I for one love the idea of a stimulus tournament and think this is great exposure for the WSOP.
This tournament will without a doubt be the largest field of people ever outside of the main event. The tournament start today May 30th at 2 p.m. Good luck to all players and pros!
