Players Have To Use Their heads When It Comes To Football

Football players as any sportsman are an interesting breed. Between them and hockey players, it’s hard to say who are the most interesting.  Football and hockey are two of the most violent of American sports. Both sports are highly concerned about concussions. In the case of football much like the steroids era in baseball it is in reaction to something that has been a problem probably since the league started.

I remember before the concussion hubbub seeing college and pro football players getting themselves psyched up for games by banging their helmeted heads against goal posts or banging heads with their teammates. I even remember a kid from the University of South Florida banging his helmet against his own head before a game bloodying his face.

When I was on the freshman football team in high school I remember form tackling being hammered into our heads as the only way to tackle. Wrap our arms around the ball carriers legs and drive him into the ground. I realize that it is not always possible to wrap your arms around someone whether it is because of the angle or the size of the player but it is better than the alternative of leading with one’s head or shoulder and suffering not only a serious head injury but also a neck injury where players in such a collision may never walk again.

Football by its very nature is a very violent and dangerous sport. I am guilty of the fact that I love to watch the sport of football and like any other fan I have my favorite teams. Favorite players. Favorite coaches. Favorites. However, if I were to have a son I would not allow him to play football because of the dangers I’ve mentioned. Remember that at the turn of the century it was almost outlawed by the President.

There are lawsuits being filed against the league but it cannot be totally responsible for behavior that players are partly responsible for. Let’s not forget the coaches who are teaching some of this dangerous behavior. Not to mention the new rule involving kickoffs will take some time to take full effect. How many concussions will have happened by then?
