Plaxico Burress

Mayor Bloomberg called for Buress' head from day one. His comments regarding the case were tantamount to Govenor Ross Barnett interrupting the wife of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers testimony. While she was on the witness stand, Govenor Barnett shook hands with the accused killer, Byron De La Beckwith, who was aquitted in 1964. Of course the Burress case is not the national tragedy that the Medgar Evers case was, but I think you get my point. As soon as Bloomberg opened his mouth, the Burress case should have been thrown out of court.
By now we've all heard of how stringent the gun laws are in New York. You carry a gun without a license, you go to jail. Plaxico Burress, up to the point of his arrest, had no criminal record and should have been fined, forced to do hours of community service, and at worst, house arrest. Yet he has been put away for two years and his NFL career is over. A man who has a 4 year old son and a baby on the way.
Burress carried the gun for protection because as much as the naysayers won't admit it, athletes are targets to the ruthless criminals who prey on people with money. If you are a recognized athlete, in the wrong place at the wrong time, you will be robbed and in some cases murdered (as Sean Taylor of the Redskins was robbed and murdered).
Sure, we all admit that it was foolish of Plaxico to carry a concealed weapon. We also agree that he could have actually killed someone accidently, instead of shooting himself. But that same admonition applies to the millions of people who get behind the wheel of their cars everyday and talk on their cell phones all the way to work, and talk on their phones all the way home. They are not only jeopardizing their own lives but the lives of others. And guess what? Every day in America, someone dies because of talking on the cell phone but rarely, if ever, is the perpetrator put in jail. They are not incarcerated because they have either killed themselves, or the person they manslaughtered cannot testify to the fact that "this idiot was on the phone and killed me!" Plus, the perpetrator is not on the phone when the authorities arrive, nor does it come up in the investigation.
It's totally unfair that Plaxico will now sit in a prison with hard core criminals because he foolishly shot himself. I'm not a Giants fan and I've never been a big Plaxico Burress fan, but right is right. Hmmmm, I wonder if Bret, Peyton, or Tom accidently shot themselves, I wonder if they would be sitting in prison? It's just a thought.
