Phillies offense shows up as Halladay shuts down the Cards
Written by Jovan Alford, Saturday October 01 2011
Today was the first game of Cardinals-Phillies series (NLDS). The pitching matchup was (STL) Kyle Lohse vs (PHI) Roy Halladay.
Roy Halladay gave up a quick three run homerun in the first inning but quickly settled down after that. The opposing pitcher Kyle Lohse went through the Phillies hitters quickly in the first three innings as he did not give up a hit until the 4th inning.
That is when the tide turned as in the sixth inning Ryan Howard hits a 3 run homerun and a couple batters later Raul Ibanez hits a 2 run homerun. So the Phillies put five runs up in the inning and then in the seventh the Phillies put a three spot and finally two in the eighth.
For the Cardinals, Lance Berkman was 1 for 4 with a three run homerun and for the Phillies Ryan Howard went 1 for 3 with a three run homerun and 4 RBIs. Other players that contributed was Rollins, Utley, Pence and Victorino. Finally we can't forget about Roy Halladay who threw eight innings and only gave up three hits, three earned runs and had eight strikeouts.
For tomorrow's game 2 it will be for the Cardinals: Chris Carpenter and for the Phillies: Cliff Lee.
