Our “Hot” Stove is Broken

MC Homer Written by MC Homer, Thursday December 17 2009

I don’t know if it is because our stove is old and needs to be replaced, if so, I hope we still have that warranty. Maybe it is the horribly bad weather we’ve had of late, knocking out the power; it has sprinkled a few days this month ya know. I don’t believe either of those are the reason for our broken stove though. I think someone pulled the plug, rendering the stove powerless. I looked for the cord to plug back in, only to find the power cord has been cut. The culprit must be the one person who is responsible for keeping our stove hot, Brian Sabean.

It is no secret how much I love baseball, well, love the Giants, I guess would be more accurate. Last year was full of surprises and disappointments alike. They finished strong, 6-1 in their last seven games, taking two of three in San Diego (SF came into that series without a single win there in six chances), but I have no good reason to be hopeful for next season. I have a really hard time getting excited about my 2010 Giants, except for every fifth day when two-timing Timmy (one Cy Young award for each full season in the bigs, not too shabby) takes the hill.

The winter meetings are over. Spring training is still two months away, yet teams are already jockeying for playoff positions, don’t tell me they’re not. Some deals have already been made, more are happening as we speak, and still others are not far from signing their good ol’ John Hancock on the dotted line. Everyday I check to see if the Giants are one of the teams jumping into the fray, even if only for a veteran utility man, especially since Juan Uribe doesn’t look like he’s coming back or a long reliever, of which a team can never have too many of. No such luck.

To say I am disappointed that the Giants resigned GM Brian Sabean this offseason is like saying Ted Williams was an alright hitter. As much as I criticize Bruce Bochy, he doesn’t have a lot to work with, so it’s hard to fault him for what he can’t control. Needless to say, I won’t be leading the “Impeach Bruce” campaign, yet. Sabean on the other hand, I may very well put a protest together. His string of deals, save for Freddy Sanchez, has been downright embarrassing. Ryan Garko? He’s no better than a bench warmer. Brad Penny? Lost to St. Louis via free agency. Aaron Rowand and Edgar Renteria? They should renegotiate their contracts due to their lack non-existent production, even their defense sucks. Should I even mention the $120+ million man, Barry Zito (although, he’s coming around)? That is just a small sample of what I like to call Brian Sabean specials.

Enough about the bad moves though, what’s done is done. As the kids like to say, it is what it is. I can complain all I want, but last year was incredible. San Francisco was at least 15 games better than they should have been, thanks only to their pitching staff and Pablo Sandoval. Don’t expect a repeat performance this season though. Not with the way the team is sitting idly by as free agents are spoken for one by one.

I know this isn’t New York and Managing General Partner, Bill Newcomb, can’t throw stacks of money at players (at least, is unwilling to), but with the pitching staff they’ve got, they don’t need much to become a contender. Look at Seattle. They are not a big market, but they are willing to take a chance on winning. That’s more than the Giants can say. Trading for Cliff Lee and signing Chone Figgins, who, might I add, should have been the number one option for SF, catapults the Mariners to championship contenders in my book. I guess 4 years and $36 million was too expensive though ($8+ million per year sounds doable to me) for a third baseman who plays defense and runs like the wind. Can you imagine him with Triples Alley? He’d have 50 homeruns in a single season, all inside the ballpark! Cheap bastards.

San Francisco is really only three players away from being a playoff contender. They need a catcher, since Big Money Molina is not returning, either a first or third baseman, because Sandoval can play the other, and finally, a left fielder. Even though super prospect Buster Posey is not ready to don the tools of ignorance full time, I’m okay with him learning on the fly if the two other positions are filled with decent players, as opposed to the previously mentioned Brian Sabean specials.

Let’s forget about Adrian Gonzalez, he’s obviously off limits. I’ve heard names like Nick Johnson and Adrian Beltre thrown around. Talk about a let down. I have to say though, with all the talk about a power hitter, I don’t think that is our problem. Sure, chicks dig the long ball, but that is not the only way to score runs. How about signing a few guys who can hit for average? Singles can be just as devastating as homeruns, sometimes even moreso. Besides, everyone knows that hitting a homerun is an instant rally killer. Speed and defense are a constant, while power is a luxury that comes and goes depending on the ballpark and atmospheric conditions (can you believe I got a ‘D’ in meteorology with that kind of knowledge?!?).

There is still plenty of time to fill the holes on this team, but as time passes and players sign elsewhere, it worries me that the Giants will settle for second-rate players, if they sign anyone at all. They are chalk full of mediocrity, more of it will only hurt them. They need a stud in the middle of their lineup, someone who hits ‘em where they ain’t, and not necessarily over the fence.

I know hitters don’t want to sign in San Francisco because, admittedly or not, professional athletes are all about their own stats. AT&TPark is nothing less than a nightmare for power hitters, just ask the Phillies who combined for three homeruns in four games (you realize they led the world with 224 bombs, including four players with 30+, right?). The upside to a big yard however, is there is a lot of space for uncatchable balls. We call those ‘Texas Leaguers’.

Guys like IF Mark DeRosa, C Miguel Olivo, and OF Jermaine Dye have all been mentioned in the same breath as the Giants. Pffft, whatever. I guess they would be upgrades from what we have now, but I want a big name, just one. We’ve had one big name trade/free agent in the last two decades, and I’d say Mr. Bonds worked out pretty well (on the field).

Maybe I could have saved us both some time, beginning and ending this article with this: all I want for Christmas is a big name free agent, only because I still have my two front teeth. *Earmuffs kids* Too bad there’s no such thing as Santa.
