Opting for Imperfection

Kerri Senno Written by Kerri Senno, Monday December 28 2009

The 14-0 Indianapolis Colts brought the elusive undefeated season into the 15th game of the season. With the struggling New York Jets and the weak Buffalo Bills ahead, it seemed like an easy road to perfection. It was something Peyton Manning earned; it was something the team earned; and most of all, it was Curtis Painter’s biggest nightmare.

With a five point lead in the 3rd Quarter, Colts’ management decided to put in 2nd String Quaterback Curtis Painter with zero career yards, and sit super star Peyton Manning, who had just surpassed the 50,000 yard mark in his career. Basically, Peyton Manning is 50,000 times better than Curtis Painter. The whole offense was thrown off by Peyton’s absence.

Some credit is due to the New York Jets, who put up their second highest point total of the season with 29. In the current NFL setup, only one other team has gone 16-0, but, as everyone knows, the Patriots completely defeated the integrity of this record by losing to the Giants in Superbowl XLII. This is probably what GM Chris Polian and Coach Jim Caldwell were trying to avoid. What is worth it though—taking a shot at being the only team to go 19-0, or to be one of forty four Super Bowl Champions? The Colts already had everything wrapped up—the division, the bye week, and the 7th consecutive 12 win season.  The Colts have racked up wins against some of NFLs best this season: the Cardinals, Patriots, Ravens and Broncos, but they let the Jets get the best of them.

Much to your discomfort, all year round, your Grandmother keeps plastic on the sofa to preserve the beautiful floral cushions. “Well, what if the Queen comes by?” She remarks. Well, now forty years later, just before the Queen’s scheduled visit, your Grandmother has removed the plastic because of the possibility that she may win a local couch preservation contest in which she is far from a shoe-in.

Peyton Manning’s face said it all as he resembled a child whose mother had just told him he could not play outside until his homework was done.  Of course, he did not throw his coach under the bus, but he had every right to be upset and disappointed. Now, if the Colts do not win the Superbowl, which they have a 1 in 8 chance of winning, they will always regret giving Curtis Painter his first ever NFL appearance in Game 15 of the 2009 season.

Kerri, you think maybe the NE Patriot fans wished that THEY had rested their starters instead of losing Wes Welker for the postseason and most likely ALL of next season as well with what looks like ACL and MCL tears?

Sorry, I meant 18-1. My brain isn't working yet on this cold December morning.

I would have liked to see the Colts go for the perfect season as well, but just imagine if Manning or Reggie Wayne got hurt in that game. I would take the Colts version of 19-1 with a Super Bowl win, over the Patriots version of 19-1 any day.

The Bengals won't play next week for a few reasons....they won't take the chance of hurting someone, if New England wins they have nothing to play for, and if the Steelers need them to win to get into the playoffs (which is a possibility) they will do everything in their power to lose! Indy laying down (and sitting half of their starters) really hurt my Steelers, but they set you up beautifully!

I think the Bengals still have seeding to play for. But I dunno if I'd rather play the Chargers than the Colts right now anyway.

Kerri, I wouldn't worry about that trade, it sounds like the Bengals are benching everyone too... looks like we will see Jets/Pats...

The Jets will take what they can get. Is it too late for the Colts to trade Curtis Painter to the Bengals for Game 16???

Haha, this was Painter's worst nightmare. The Jets, however, only got the best of the Colts for the 2+ quarters they played the real team.
