On The Farm: Bears And Admirals
Written by Chriso, Wednesday January 13 2010
It was a tale of two teams going in opposite directions.
The Hershey Bears had won twelve games in a row, including five in a row on the road. The Norfolk Admirals had lost seven out of eight, including four in a row at home. Hershey is the farm team for the Washington Capitals, Norfolk is affiliated with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The game started with the Bears dominating the puck and keeping it in the Norfolk end. The only thing that Norfolk dominated in the first round was when Mitch Fritz sent one of the Bears to the locker room after a first period fight. Fritz also picked up a penalty for tripping. Norfolk survived that penalty and another, but the period ended with Hershey ahead 1-0.
The second period was a complete switch. At one point, Fritz started another fight in front of the Hershey bench. It drew the attention of the crowd, the radio announcer, and the video display on the scoreboard. Meanwhile, Justin Keller put the puck in the net to tie the game. By the end of the period, the Admirals led 2-1.
The third period started with Norfolk expanding the lead. Then Hershey battled back to make it 3-2. A potential tying goal was called off for a high stick. Then Fritz was called for his second tripping penalty of the game. The Bears scored the first power play goal of the game to tie the score at 3-3. It remained that way until the final seconds. Mark Parrish intercepted a pass in the Hershey end and scored the winner with seven seconds left.
It was an exciting finish that handed the Bears their 9th loss of the season, as they remain at the top of the AHL. Norfolk continues to struggle near the bottom, but for one day, their fates were in different directions.
