Not There Yet

Brian Cushing Written by Brian Cushing, Friday December 04 2009

I feel very honored to win the AFC Defensive Rookie of the Month award. I feel like I’m doing a pretty good job and things are headed in the right direction, but I’m not there yet. Slowly I’m getting to where I want to be.

The more you play in this league the more knowledge you gain, the better you play. The physical tools are always there. Once you learn more about the game, you just get better.

One of the biggest things for me was just the game slowing down. At first I wanted to go out there every play at full speed and make every tackle. Now, I understand more of how the game is played, down and distance, when to go all-out and when to wait and feel out the play.

We’re 5-6 and I definitely feel like we’re a better team than that. But you are who you are and that’s our record right now, that’s our situation. We put ourselves in this position and now we have to get ourselves out of it.

The best thing we can do is win our next game and be 1-0. It’s a cliché but we really do have to take one game at a time if we want to get to where we expect ourselves to be as a team.

Jacksonville beat us last time and it was a real close one. They’ve got Maurice Jones-Drew, a mobile quarterback in David Garrard and a lot of other weapons. They’re a very strong team and tough to stop.

If we’re going to have a different result against them we have to get back to studying the film, then executing our game plan. And we have to do it better than last time. We have to play better.
