NFL Drag

A longer NFL Draft? Just what we need, right?

Who said you can’t improve on perfection? Clearly you don’t know Roger Goodell.

Last week the NFL commissioner announced that the 2010 NFL Draft will be held over three days. Genius, absolutely genius.

All those years we thought we wanted less draft. And Goodell gave us that starting in 2008, reducing each first round selection from 15 minutes to 10 minutes. The second round was treated similarly, going down from 10 minutes per selection to seven.

The difference was huge. The first round was completed in just three hours and 30 minutes. That was down from six hours and eleven minutes the year before.

The time saved seemed great! That meant we could go out and have a life after the first two rounds. Let’s go out and party! In truth, we just weren’t dedicated enough. An NFL Draft party is the only party we need. We were such fools. We were worshiping a golden calf.

Leave it to Goodell to show us the light. Next year the draft kicks off on Thursday in prime time. If there is a television series you religiously watch on Thursday, it can wait. Nothing comes before the NFL is the only commandment. You might as well confess to cheating if you change the channel to another network. Starting at 7:30 PM, the first round consumes the next three-plus hours of your life.

Day two will air the second and third rounds starting at 6:30 PM on Friday. And Saturday will close it out with rounds four, five, six and seven beginning at 10 AM. Sunday is left free because, honestly, who watches NFL stuff on Sunday?

Goodell had an epiphany atop Mount Rainier similar to Kevin Bacon’s character in the movie “The Air Up There.” When Jimmy Dolan he reached the summit of the mountain, Dolan finally learned he had to let go of his past to move on. Goodell instead wants to take our souls now and for the future. Extending the draft by one day is the first step.

A Thursday night start to the draft is perfect, as the truly dedicated fans wouldn’t miss it, even at the expense of work and family. Ted the accountant better call in sick to attend the draft at Radio City Music Hall. Risking being seen on t.v. with his New York Jets jersey will be worth it. Crunching numbers can wait. Draft time is time to digest 40-times and bench press reps.

And with the first round ending around 11 PM, accountant Ted can spend all night previewing players that would be perfect for his team for next two days. Work can wait (if Ted still has a job after his boss saw him booing the Jets’ first round selection).

So what’s the next step? How about extending the draft to one day per round? Maybe get Super Bowl Sunday declared as a national holiday? Or how about an eighth day, dedicated only to football? Goodell could make an agreement with President Barak Obama. In exchange Roger can promise the Chicago Bears win Super Bowl 44 for the 44th President.

Why rush the NFL Draft? It’s not that our lives are too hectic. We have too many distractions keeping us from the Draft.
