Mock Draft v2.0

RandolphC Written by RandolphC, Thursday April 09 2009

For what it's worth, I was right about Chicago using their first round pick on a quarterback. But it also took a third rounder and next year's first. Now with the trade completed and other transactions taken into consideration, here's the second edition mock draft.

1. Detroit Lions – OT Jason Smith, Baylor

Even after Matt Stafford’s brilliant workout, the Lions are still not sold on him.

2. St. Louis Rams – OT Eugene Monroe, Virginia

They said goodbye to Orlando Pace. The new era begins with a new anchor at left tackle.

3. Kansas City Chiefs – LB Aaron Curry, Wake Forrest
Thanks to his versatility, KC takes arguably the best player in the draft and moves him wherever Curry is needed.

4. Seattle Seahawks – QB Matthew Stafford, Georgia
QB Matt Hasselbeck will turn 34 this year. He will pass the torch soon, and Stafford will be next in line.

5. Cleveland Browns – DT B.J. Raji, Boston College
Depending upon what Raji tested positive for will determine how far he drops.

6. Cincinnati Bengals – OT Andre Smith, Alabama
They have to close the revolving door called an offensive line that allowed 51 sacks. Is Smith a character concern, maybe on another team, but not in Cincy.

7. Oakland Raiders – WR Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech
Tired of wasting money on free agent receivers (Javon Walker and Ashlie Lelie), Oakland tries a more inexpensive solution.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars – OT Eben Britton, Arizona
As badly as the Jags need a receiver, they’ll address the O-line so the quarterback can safely throw to his new targets.

9. Green Bay Packers – DE/OLB Brian Orakpo, Texas
The conversion to a 3-4 began with DE Aaron Kampman moving to OLB, and it continues with the addition of Orakpo.

10. San Francisco 49ers – DE/OLB Aaron Maybin, Penn State
They won’t say it, but I think they like QB Shawn Hill to start. What they don’t like is the lack of a bookend opposite OLB Parys Haralson.

11. Buffalo Bills – DE Everett Brown, Florida State
With only 23 sacks last year, they need a stud to lead the stampede to the quarterback.

12. Denver Broncos – QB Matt Sanchez, USC
Head coach Josh McDaniels couldn’t trade for former Trojan QB Matt Cassel, so McDaniels drafts one.

13.Washington Redskins – DE Larry English, Northern Illinois
DE Jason Taylor didn’t work out. The Redskins will welcome this English man.

14. New Orleans Saints – LB Brian Cushing, USC
Cushing gets the nod over a corner back because he can tackle and rush the passer.

15. Houston Texans – LB Clay Matthews, USC
It doesn’t matter that the Texans recently signed LBs Cato June and Buster Davis. They’re not full sized. Matthews is grown and can play DE in passing situations.

16. San Diego Chargers – RB Knowshon Moreno, Georgia
The future of the backfield is in question (Is LaDanian Tomlinson in decline? Can they sign Darren Sproles to a long term deal and how many productive years does he have left?) . Moreno would be insurance.

17. New York Jets – WR Jeremy Macklin, Missouri
The receivers are a big question mark without Laveranues Coles. Macklin can be a play-maker of the exclamation point type.

18. Denver Broncos – CB Malcom Jenkins, Ohio State
They released Dre Bly and Champ Bailey isn’t getting younger. Jenkins gets to learn from one of the best.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – QB Josh Freeman, Kansas State
They couldn’t trade for Jay Cutler and the let Jeff Garcia go. The holdovers (Brian Griese, Luke McCown, Josh Johnson) don’t inspire confidence.

20. Detroit Lions – ILB Rey Maualuga, USC
Goodbye Tampa-2. Hello big, physical, and mean. The new defense takes shape.

21. Philadelphia Eagles – RB Chris Wells, Ohio State
To fix the short yardage problem, Philly signed an OT and a FB. The missing piece is the physical ball carrier that can move the pile. Wells can do that and more.

22. Minnesota Vikings – OT William Beatty, Connecticut
They will let QBs Sage Rosenfels and Tavaris Jackson compete for the starting job. Beatty helps make it a fair fight in a secured pocket.

23. New England Patriots – LB Clint Sintim, Virginia, Cincinnati
Tweeners are the hot accessory this draft. The Pats reach for one before they are all gone.

24. Atlanta Falcons – DE/DT Tyson Jackson, LSU
Big enough to play tackle on run downs, athletic enough to play end in passing situations.

25. Miami Dolphins – ILB James Laurinitis, Ohio State
The defense is well built for the future, but it lacks one long term ILB to play alongside Channing Crowder.

26. Baltimore Ravens – WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland
Besides providing QB Joe Flacco with a much needed target, Baltimore must score more following the losses on defense.

27. Indianapolis Colts – WR Percy Harvin, Florida
Tony Dungy is no longer the coach, but his philosophy lives on. They take the player that performs best on the biggest stage.

28. Philadelphia Eagles - DE Michael Johnson, Georgia Tech
DEs Darren Howard and Juqua Parker crossed the 30 threshold and only Trent Cole has been productive out of the young ends.

29. New York Giants – WR Kenny Britt, Rutgers
OK, now it’s about Plaxico Burress, not Amani Toomer.

30. Tennessee Titans – DT Peria Jerry, Mississippi
You don’t replace an Albert Haynesworth, but Tennessee can find a run stuffer.

31. Arizona Cardinals – RB LeSean McCoy, Pittsburgh
‘Zona could be out two RBs from last year if they grant Edgerrin James’ wish.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers – DT Fili Moala, USC
The starting D-line is over 30 with few players slotted to be next in line. It’s time to breathe fresh air at DE.
