<intro>
     Everyone loves a good nickname. I find it unfortunate, that aside from MMA, only a select few from each sport have them. Of course, if everyone had them, they wouldn't be so fun. In mixed martial arts, almost everyone has a nickname, either self-proclaimed or given to them by a trainer or old friend, or even by mom and dad. Below, I have listed some of my favorites. I am, by no means, an MMA expert, so if you have any nicknames or the history to the ones I've selected, please, feel free to chime in.

     Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine made his professional MMA debut in 2001. Since then, he has battled his way to a 14-4 record with one draw. He began his UFC career on The Ultimate Fighter 2 as a heavyweight. Although considered a favorite, he lost to Rashad Evans in the semis. You can see him face Quentin Jackson this Saturday in Columbus, Ohio in the main event at UFC 96.

     Jackson, who has a record of 29-7, is known as “Rampage,” and is one of the more well-known nicknames in the sport. After winning 11 out of his first 12 matches, he joined Japan's now-defunct Pride Fighting Championships in 2001. Five years later, Rampage came to the UFC. He is 4-1 since joining the promotion, his only loss coming by decision to champion Forrest Griffin.

     Many people, myself included, may not even know “Tank” Abbot's first name. David grew up in Huntington Beach, California, home of “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy,” Tito Ortiz. Abbot is best known for his tough skull and brawler fighting style that he refined growing up in the streets and bars of his hometown. Always a fan favorite for his fighting style, he has compiled a record of 8-10 since joining the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1995 at UFC 6.

     The next name on my list may only be known by hardcore MMA fans. I am slightly familiar with Bret “The Angry Hick” Bergmark only because he was born and raised the same place I was, in the North Bay of California. Before his MMA career, he dabbled in bull riding. After an injury to his hand forced him to stop, he took up Jiu Jitsu in 1999. He has a record of 5-1 with one draw, his lone loss coming by virtue of a triangle choke at the hands of Mike Pyle.

     Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic's nickname came from his history as a Croatian law enforcement officer. Not only was he a cop, he was part of Croatia's elite Anti-Terrorist Unit, the 'ATJ Lucko.' As well as being a current member of the police force, he also served as a member of Parliament from 2003-2007. Many MMA fans know him only as Mirko Cro Cop. After successful stints with Pride and K-1, he joined the UFC in 2006. He holds a record of 24-6 with two draws and one no contest. Of his 24 victories, 18 have come via knockout.

     Those are only some of my favorite nicknames throughout the sport. There are so many good ones, it was difficult to chose, but not everyone has a good nickname. How about Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg? Sean “The Muscle Shark” Sherk wouldn't be so bad if he hadn't tested positive for the banned substance nandrolone in 2007 the day before a fight. He does, however, hold a very impressive 33-3 MMA record. Very unoriginal names such as Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon and Kenny “Ken-Flo” Florian are weak attempts at a nickname.

     Mixed Martial Arts, and the UFC especially, is gaining popularity by the day. Ever since Senator John McCain dubbed it as “human cockfighting,” the sport has taken off. Rules and regulations have been put in place for safety and so these events can be legally held in cities such as Las Vegas and Anaheim. Like boxing, women are even starting to compete in this sport. The sky is the limit for MMA, and as it grows, I hope the original nicknames continue to flow.
