Mets Should Get Lugo
Written by Rory, Friday July 17 2009
The Red Sox have just got rid of Julio Lugo and are willing to eat most of his contract and take a fringe prospect for him. The Mets should get him.
The Mets should trade for the 33-year old SS who despite being cut has this not bad line .284/.352/.367. He is obviously no longer in his prime but he is still a useful player and obviously better than Angel Berroa. He can also play 2B, the outfield, and has played 16 games at 3B. He usually is an average to above average defender, although his last 2 years in Boston have not been good defensively or offensively. He has hit for no power this year with an ISO of .083 and outside of last year has always had a ISO of .107 or better. His career ISO is .119. He stated when he was a free agent that he wanted to play in NY. He grew up in Brooklyn and was even taught by my best friend's dad. He is supposedly a good club house guy and could be a player who would benefit from a change of scenery. If he does come here and start playing well, the Mets could take more time and be cautious with Jose Reyes. It's another low risk/semi-high reward situation that Omar usually loves to make. Why not take a shot? I mean Angel Berroa is on the Major League roster right now...
