Mets Can Get Their #2 Starter
Written by Rory, Wednesday August 12 2009
The Mets can their number two starter for the rest year and next in Reds' starter Aaron Harang.
According to reports Aarong Harang has cleared waivers and can be traded to any team. The Mets should be that team. Harang only makes $12.5 million next year which is reasonable for a starter like Harang who should benefit from a move to a team like the Mets.
Before last year, Harang was one of the most underrated pitchers in the NL. From 2005-2007 Harang put up FIP's of 3.67, 3.68, and 3.71 with K/BB's of 3.20, 3.86, and 4.19.
Last year however his K's were slightly down while his walks were up but Harang's biggest problem was the long ball. He had 1.71 HR/9! The league average last year was 1.01 and this year 1.05.
This year he has not pitched like the Harang of '05-'07 but he has pitched better than the '07 Harang. His K's are up, BB's are down, and he's brought his HR/9 down to 1.33 (which is still a bit high). This year he has an ERA of 4.43 but has a high .347 BABIP and his FIP is a pretty good 4.08.
A switch to Citi Field may be just the thing that Harang needs to return to his '05-'07 form. His HR rate will likely come down due to his new ballpark. He can be the number 2 starter the Mets need and he is only 31 years old. He can probably be had for little in terms of prospects and his salary is fairly reasonable.
Please Omar let's get Harang.

I wouldn't give up Niese, Martinez, Holt, Mejia (whom I've loved since last year), or Flores. I wouldn't be against trading Parnell for Harang but I would see if we could avoid that.

I agree with a trade to an extent, but I don't think the Mets could give up prospects for Harang or should. That has been the problem with the Mets for the past couple of years, their lack of talent in the their farm teams. The only prospect they can really deal is Martinez or perhaps Parnell, Neise. I don't think they should give up either of them.

Harang is probably praying this will happen. Going from Great American ballpark to Citi Field will help him greatly.
