Martin in good position to snatch Daytona 500 win
Written by unclerico, Thursday February 11 2010
Most sportsbook odds (bodog reviews) didn’t expect Mark Martin to challenge for the Sprint Cup last year, but the 51-year-old pushed teammate Jimmie Johnson all the way to the end of the season. Martin will start in the great spot when the green flag drops on the 52nd running of the Great American Race on Sunday.
Daytona 500 Odds – Sunday, February 14, 2:00 PM ET
Martin (+1000) starts from the pole, and nine times, the Daytona 500 has been won from the No.1 position. Hendrick teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. (+800) will be right beside him, while Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson (both at +900) probably won’t be far behind. Not to mention, Tony Stewart (+750) and Ryan Newman (+2500) will also be driving Hendrick equipment, and you can bet that this stable will be well represented throughout the race. Johnson is in a backup car because of a wreck during practice, while Martin also has lost a car during Speedweeks.
Kyle Busch (+725) is the actual favorite in your sportsbook, and the No.18 car looked very good during practice, at the front of the draft as well as at the back. Busch is eager to get the season started after beginning last year as one of the favorites to take the Sprint Cup away from Johnson, but even with four wins, a number of bad finishes kept Busch out of the Chase.
Busch’s older brother Kurt (+1400) is one of the best restrictor-plate drivers in NASCAR, but he tends to come up short at the end of the race. Famously, it was Busch who pushed Newman to the win in the 2008 Daytona 500 past Stewart. Busch has also had a tough Speedweeks, losing two cars to wrecks. Kevin Harvick (+1400) began Speedweeks feeling under the weather, but he surely felt a bit better after winning the Budweiser Shootout last Saturday. Harvick is another great restrictor-plate driver, and he won the 2007 Daytona 500 by edging Martin in the closest finish in the history of the Great American Race, and he came up inches short against Johnson in the first set of Duels on Thursday.
Don’t forget about the defending champion, Matt Kenseth (+2200), and even with a new sponsor on the No.17 car in Crown Royal, Kenseth is still one of the top drivers in NASCAR. Last year, the 2003 series champion won the first two races of the season, but they lacked the consistency that team was famous for, which had to be due to a crew chief change.
Mark Martin has come up short in various Daytona 500s, and the No.5 team is even better after a year together. To get some good value for your sports betting money, go with Mark Martin.
