Mariano do you age?
Written by NewYorkTony, Friday October 30 2009
Matt Stairs swung and missed and another 2 inning save was in the books for the incomparable Mariano Rivera . He is approaching 40 and still is accomplishing things the youngest and most talented closers can only dream to accomplish.
How can this be? How can the Yankees continue to tap this Well time and time again and still drink the finest nectar on the planet. There are no answers, actually people have given up asking the questions. He is that good.
In 2001 Joe Torre started using Mariano more as a one inning closer in the Postseason. In GAME 7 vs. the Dbacks that year, Mariano came in in the 8th inning and struck out the side, but in the 9th inning the wheels fell off and the Dynasty was over.
Baseball experts speculated that after 5 years of wear and tear there was no way Mariano could be used in that manner any longer . Torre and other Yankee people actually agreed.
Here we are in 2009, 8 full years later and Mariano is still chugging along like a train that is riding on tracks that never end. His stats and accomplishments transcend hitting, pitching starters and closers. He is one of the best baseball players to ever play. Period! Very few have even sniffed the plateau Mariano has reached. He hasn't just reached this plateau, he stands firmly atop it feet planted arms crossed staring down at his peers, if you can call them that.
Last week some frustrated and delusional Angel fans posted pictures of Mariano allegdly spitting on the baseball. Who were the first to defend him? THE ANGEL PLAYERS THEMSELVES! Tori Hunter's exact quote "some people have too much time on their hands if there posting nonsense like that" Amen Tori. Higher life forms have no need to cheat.
Mariano defies baseball logic and common sense . Pitchers are supposed to throw various pitches at various speeds to confuse and befuddle the batter. Mariano throws one pitch. ONE PITCH! He throws it better than anyone has in the history of the game. His cutting Fastball dances like no other pitch ever seen before. I go out on a limb here and say we also NEVER WILL see it again.
Tom Kelly the Twins former longtime Manager had this to say about Mariano back in 1996 almost like he was some sort of Merlin foreseeing the dark future MLB Hitters would have at the hands of Mariano. "He belongs in a higher league, I dont know where that league is but this one seems too easy for him."
God Bless you Mo! All Yankee fans cringe at the thought the day your Well is dried up. For now , Keep pumping that Nectar. The Sweetest Nectar on Earth!
