Let's Go Bowling: NCAA Style

Did you know that there have already been three college football bowl games played?  Yeah, me either.

That is what the BCS has turned college football into, the NFL preseason.  Think about it for a second.  There are 34 bowl games this year and only one of them matters.  The rest mean absolutely nothing.  Just like the NFL preseason games.  And just like the preseason NFL games, fans must pay full price for tickets and someone is getting rich.  In college football it's the organizers of the individual bowl games and ultimately the BCS. This sucks.

Anyway, I thought we would take a look a few of these meaningless bowl games to see if there is any reason to watch.  I doubt it, but let's check.

Of the three games already played, only one of them was even remotely interesting.  That would be the Las Vegas Bowl, because Tiger Woods was in attendance.  Apparently Tiger was confused about what was going on.  He just heard there were "Cougars" and "Beavers" in Vegas and he hopped on the first flight he could get.  Unfortunately for him it was just the BYU Cougars playing the Oregon State Beavers.  In spite of the fact that the "Cougars" pounded the "Beavers", Tiger left unsatisfied.  And he hired a driver, just to be safe.

Did you know there is not one, but two Bowl games named after pizza companies?  Yep, Ohio plays Marshall in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl and Connecticut plays South Carolina in the Papajohns.com Bowl.  Is anybody else hungry?  Pass me a slice of pizza and I'll pass on watching these two bowl games.

Being from the Philadelphia area, I'll probably watch a few plays of the EagleBank Bowl with Temple vs. UCLA.  UCLA only got invited because Army wasn't bowl eligible.  And Temple got in with their first winning season since 1990.  Temple also hasn't played in a bowl game since dinosaurs roamed the earth.  Or maybe it was just 1979.  I'll have to check that and get back to you.

The Chick-fil-A Bowl pits Virginia Tech against Tennessee.  The last time these two teams met, in the 1994 Gator Bowl, Peyton Manning was the QB for the Vols.  I may be drunk during this game on New Year's Eve, but I won't be drunk enough to watch this bore-a-thon unless Peyton suits up again in Vols orange.

The Alamo Bowl has Texas Tech vs. Michigan State, but the Spartans might not have enough eligible players left by game time.  It seems that nine Spartans players have been charged with conspiracy and assault after a fight at a frat house.  But only two of them have been thrown off the team so far.  They must be backups huh?  Remember the Alamo, but forget about the Alamo Bowl.

The International Bowl has South Florida playing Northern Illinois.  The only reason I even mention this stinker of a game is that USF coach Jim Leavitt is fighting (pun intended) allegations that he choked and hit a player during halftime of a game earlier this season.  Even if his team puts up that much of a fight I won't be watching this game.  But if they had a camera in the locker room at halftime, maybe.

Northwestern hasn't won a bowl game since 1948 and I'm supposed to care about their matchup with Auburn in the Outback Bowl?  Just give me the shrimp on the Bar-B and a couple of Foster's and you can keep this bowl for yourself.

The Meineke Car Care Bowl has a reunion of North Carolina coach Butch Davis and Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt.  They were both on Jimmy Johnson's staff that cheated; I mean won a national championship at U. of Miami and then both followed him to the NFL with the Miami Dolphins.  Great.  The alumni of both schools and Jimmy Johnson care about this game.  Not me.

The Sun Bowl matchup pits Stanford against Oklahoma.  I'd rather watch the Oklahoma players struggle in vain to spell Oklahoma than watch this game.

Who in their right mind is going to waste their time watching Ohio State lose yet again in a bowl game?  This time they're playing Oregon in the Rose Bowl.  Ohio State has lost six straight Rose Bowls.  "No Soup for you.  NEXT!"

The Sugar Bowl is such an attractive game that Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly didn't even wait until after his team's matchup against Florida to leave for Notre Dame.  Oh, no.  Now I've made Tim Tebow cry again.  Give him a tissue and give me a break.

Troy won the Sun Belt Conference.  Central Michigan won the MAC.  They meet in the GMAC Bowl.  Yeah, I don't care either.

Here's something I actually do care about.  My school (Class of 1990) Penn State plays SEC fraud LSU in the Capital One Bowl.  I'll watch because the Nittany Lions are my team.  "We Are....Penn State!"  LSU fans will watch hoping to find out what the capital of that new state called "One" is.  And the folks at Capital One will fill their wallets with "what's in your wallet".

We have two undefeated teams in playing in the Fiesta Bowl and thanks to the wonderful world of the BCS, it means absolutely nothing.  How wonderful for TCU and Boise State.  And how wonderful for those of us who enjoy sporting competitions.  Yes a winner being decided by computers, biased voters and corrupt conference commissioners is so much better than having a championship decided on the field of play right?  Playing for pride isn't the same as playing for a title.  It just isn't.

And finally we have the BCS title game with Alabama vs. Texas.  I won't even watch this game between these fraud institutions.  The SEC was garbage outside of Bama and Florida and Texas played a succession of nobodies.  And you can't convince me that any of these kids actually attend classes.  It makes it even more ridiculous that Alabama canceled classes for the game.  I know, who knew they even had classes at Alabama?

Want an actual nugget of statistical information for this game?  How about the "Heisman Curse"?  Alabama's Mark Ingram makes it six of the last seven Heisman winners to play in the BCS title game.  Unfortunately for Alabama fans, only one of them won a national championship.  That would be USC's Matt Leinart in 2004.

I think I'll just boycott college sports altogether for now.  Somebody wake me up in March when that other sport shows the world how you really determine a national champion.

Bama, why am I not surprised that you are a member of Bandwagon Nation, otherwise known as the Dallas Cowboys fans.

Again Dub thanks for picking Texas and the Eagles because that gurantees victory for both my beloved Crimson Tide and Cowboys. I wrote the preview already just to to Bama Bulletin and it's there.

Wait. Bamababe, did you just ADMIT that the entire college bowl system was filled with the "WHO CARES BOWL" games? Doesn't that make my point for me that the BCS system is a sham? Yes it does. As for the game next year, The Tide will roll over a Penn State team graduating almost all of it's talent. It will be a total rebuilding year for the Nittany Lions. Enjoy the easy win Bama. You'll need it after you lose to Texas. When are you writing that game preview?

Congrats Dub on winning the who cares.com bowl by a WHOLE two points. Wooooooooooo very impressive. When you come to Tuscaloosa next year, tell Old Pa to bring his offense. He might forget

Just as I predicted Bamababe, my Nittany Lions beat those SEC FRAUDS, LSU. No wonder Alabama went undefeated. The only teams that don't completely SUCK in the entire SEC are Florida and Alabama.

Haven't you learn yet NOT to make predictions? Les Miles is an idiot but he is very good in bowl games. Watch out.

Yes, Bamababe. Thanks for the correction. And I'll actually be watching one of these meaningless bowl games on New Years Day. My Penn State Nittany Lions will be crushing the SEC Frauds from LSU.

Looks like we have ourselves a little East Coast West Coast Rivalry going with Chriso and MC Homer. Which one of you is Tupac and which one of you is Biggie Smalls? Benn, REAL competition dies a little bit with each and every meaningless bowl game. So sad. But at least Bamababe is happy right?

Little Caesars Bowl...pathetic. Not to mention the fact that Marshall vs. Ohio sounds like a landmark lawsuit. I am so glad we have all these useless games and only one that matters instead of, say, 7 that could decide a real champion.

Good stuff B-Dub. Entertaining AND well written, must be that Penn St. education at work, huh? No Emerald Bowl mentioned? I'm a little disappointed. USC and BC at AT&T park. They better not screw up the field for my Giants or heads will roll. Otherwise, I couldn't care less about the game, and I like USC.

Oh Bama, I'll refrain from pointing out the obvious when conparing my Penn State education and the virtues of Joe Paterno as a coach and mentor to his STUDENT/athletes, to what passes as an "education" at SEC schools like Alabama.

Dub thank you so much for the early Christmas present. You picking Texas over Alabama damn near guarantees we'll win the game. So thank you. :) Oh and we do go to classes at Alabama matter of fact our quarterback is being considered for the Rhodes Scholar. But I heard at Penn State you don't even have to go to class, you just roll down your car window and they throw it in there. lol
