Just won the World Series

And I'm going to Jay Leno.
Or that's what Alan Embree could have said.
I picked him up in the taxi just after the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004. I told him that I would not charge him to go to the airport, because I was still in a state of euphoria from the Red Sox win over the Cardinals. I had waited my whole life to see a Red Sox Series win (and at only 35 years, I hadn't waited as long as many), so I offered the taxi for free.
He paid anyway, but also agreed to my two requests. He autographed a ball for my son, Peter. And he talked to Peter as I called him on the phone.
At 13 years old, waking him up at 7 was a bit early, so he wasn't as excited as he would have been if he was actually awake. Later Peter admitted that he didn't believe me that it really was Embree. I told Peter that if I was going to make it up I would have had Damon and Pedro and Manny (no disrespect to Embree...)
Besides agreeing to the autograph and phone call, I had a great conversation, discussing what it was like being on a team that came back from a 3-0 series deficit to win the ALCS against the Rival Yankees. Embree said that every teammate honestly believed they could do it. Later, on the Tonight Show, Leno asked what it was like after winning the first World Series in 86 years. Mike Timlin said that they were given free coffee everywhere they went in Boston. There was no mention of a free taxi.

Haha, so win a world series and taxi rides around the city are free. Sounds like you didn't get the memo but still offered him his well deserved ride.
