It’s April, time to pick your spots
The foliage may still be brown, but the sights below the water are still beautiful!
This is the time of year when the lakes are all transitioning from cold winter water to warmer spawning water, and not much is happening out there, fishing wise. Vegetation hasn’t appeared yet, the water is generally crystal clear, and this is the perfect time to get in a boat or canoe, and go out and pick your spots.
Go slow along the shoreline and look for any trees or logs that may have fallen into the lake during the winter. Needless to say, these are going to be the perfect hangouts for fish in the coming months, but if you don’t see them now, you’ll never know they are there.
Underwater logs and old pier mountings are structures that are going to hide fish, and if you cruise along the shoreline now, they will readily come into view. Visually mark these areas with shoreline clues like houses or trees, so that when everything is in full bloom and the water isn’t clear, you’ll know exactly where they are.
This is the time to spot cribs that have been artificially built and thrown in, usually by a conservation society or the statewide department of Natural Resources. By moving slowly on the surface and peering into the depths, cribs are now easy to find and can be marked for future fishing.
Weed lines can be easily seen where the beginning of the weeds meet sandy or rocky areas. These are going to be prime places to target later on in the summer, where the big fish will be lurking along these lines in an ambush mode, just waiting for your bait presentation.
And now is the time to find the pock marked spawning beds of many species of fish. All sandy areas should be traveled over and looked at carefully to find the big dish shaped areas where giant bluegills and other panfish spawn. Even sandbars can be checked now, since this is the time when water levels will be high, and most any boats should be able to float over the top of them.
Although maybe not the absolute best time of year to catch fish, it is the best time of year to locate fish, and if you can find the surroundings now that attract them, when the fishing season heats up a bit later, you’ll know exactly where the fish are!
