I Finally Believe Eagles Fans
Written by B-Dub, Tuesday December 20 2011
OK, I give up Eagles fans. I was wrong about Andy Reid, Juan Castillo, the Eagles players and front office. The team is on a roll and it won't stop until the Super Bowl parade in Philadelphia.
I believe that the New York Giants will lose to the New York Jets on Christmas Eve and then beat the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17.
I believe that the Eagles will beat the Cowboys for the second time this season on Christmas Eve and then crush the Washington Redskins in the final game of the regular season. That would mean that the Eagles, Cowboys and Giants would all finish with identical 8-8 records and the Eagles would win the tiebreaker of most divisional wins and take the division crown. That would even mean a home playoff game.
I believe that the Eagles would then cruise through the playoffs. San Francisco and Atlanta got lucky earlier this year. The Eagles defense is playing better now. All those blown leads were only because of the lockout and shortened training camps. They just needed more time to gel. New Orleans has no defense at all. The Detroit Lions have no playoff experience and the Green Bay Packers just lost to the lowly Kansas City Chiefs, so they can obviously be beaten.
I believe that the AFC teams are all frauds. The New England Patriots defense is just about the worst in the entire NFL. The Eagles already stomped the New York Jets. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens have great defenses but they can't score enough to beat the high-powered Eagles offense. The Houston Texans are without their starting quarterback and their best receiver can't stay healthy. And the entire AFC West is a joke. The Denver Tim Tebows could actually win that division? Are you kidding me?
I believe in Andy Reid's record in December and January. His teams always get better as the year goes on. Like I said, if it weren't for the lockout, the Eagles would have already clinched the NFC East by now.
I believe that this Eagles team is running on all cylinders now. Their hearts have grown three sizes this season and they're playing with the strength of ten Grinches, plus two.
I believe that Reid made a good choice in picking Juan Castillo as his defensive coordinator and is Andy a great game-day coach, with impeccable time-management skills, a flexible game-plan and a strong commitment to the running game.........
And I believe that if any of you believe any of that crap I just said, then you should check yourself for a scar from the full frontal lobotomy.
Seriously, do any of you people actually believe this group of quitting dogs (No Michael Vick reference intended) that wear Eagles uniforms are going to suddenly start playing like they care more about wins than their own personal statistics and their next big contract?
Do any of you actually believe that this Eagles defense is suddenly great after proving all season that they are horrible? You might want to check out the fact that the Miami Dolphins were the 24th ranked offense and the Jets were ranked 25th, before they played the Eagles. Those were two bad offenses that the Eagles stopped. The Eagles next two opponents, the Cowboys and Redskins are respectively ranked 6th and 16th offensively. Let's see if they can stop them before I praise Castillo for not being the worst defensive coordinator in the NFL.
Speaking of Castillo, I think these last two wins may have actually saved his job. It's a foregone conclusion now that Reid will be back next year. I couldn't think of a worse scenario for the future of the Eagles until it occurred to me that if the Eagles win out and make the playoffs by some miracle, that Castillo would keep his job too. Anybody want to join me in rooting for the team to lose the rest of their games now?
I believe that Reid's "late season magic" is gone. It died with former defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. Reid hasn't won a playoff game since Johnson died. Reid's last playoff win was back in 2008. As for Reid's late season circling of the wagons, it doesn't exist anymore. In 2009 the Eagles lost to the Cowboys 24-0 in the last regular season game, which cost them the division title. The next week in the playoffs, got they smoked by the Cowboys in Dallas 34-14. Last year the Eagles lost their last two games of the season, then lost to the Packers in the first round of the playoffs. All three games were even at home. So no, you can't say Andy Reid-coached teams finish the seasons strong anymore. Get with the times people.
I believe that the Eagles will beat the Cowboys and all the other highly-unlikely scenarios needed for the Eagles to get into the playoffs will somehow happen, but the Eagles won't make it when they choke and lose to the Redskins. That really would be the most galling slap in the face that this team could give their fans. But after what they've shown this year, nobody would be surprised if that is how this plays out.
That's what I believe.
