Houston Professional Sports providing mediocrity at a high price

As we say goodbye to 2010 and welcome 2011, Houston sports fans are at their wits end. It doesn’t matter, pick a professional sport: Baseball, Basketball, or Football. All of Houston’s professional sports teams have mastered the art of mediocrity and continue to disappoint their fans to the point where it’s maddening. Just tune into any of Houston’s 4 local Sports Talk Radio Stations and you will hear the constant whining; not only by the fans, but the hosts themselves.

With the cost of attending games, buying pro sports gear, or even cable or satellite TV; you can certainly understand the uprising in the fan base of Houston Professional Sports. Good seats, (not nose bleed or wedged in seats) at an Astros game will set you back at least $45 a ticket. Go to a Texans game and you will be at least $100 per ticket (Good seats) lighter in the wallet. And a good seat at a Rockets game will run you upwards of $70. Multiply any of these buy 2 or 4 and buy concessions; you could spend a small fortune attending a professional game in Houston.

What do you get for your hard earned cash?

Well, an Astros fan can be assured of viewing a product substandard to that of most of Major League Baseball. With a front office in a constant quite turmoil, and a farm system largely ignored since the departure of Gerry Hunsicker, the Astros have guaranteed their fan base a mediocre product rivaling that of the Kansas City Royals or the Pittsburg Pirates. Since 2006 the Astros have finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 4th, respectively. A total record of 391-418 in those 5 seasons have witnessed the Astros finish 500 or above just 2 times with no post season appearances. That is an accomplishment that cries out mediocre given the fact Houston participated in the World Series in 2005.

If you are a Rockets fan you don’t have it much better. One thing is for sure about the Rockets ownership; no one can ever accuse them of not spending money. Unfortunately that has translated into very little to get excited about. While much more successful then any other Houston Professional Sports Franchise, the Rockets have never returned to anything close to the glory days of 1994 and 1995, their back-to-back NBA Championships. In the years since the Rockets last championship (1995) they have posted a 659-539 record that has been good enough to make the play-offs 9 times but considering half the league makes the play-offs; is that really anything but mediocre?

The guiltiest of all Houston Professional Franchises are the Houston Texans. With Texas, and Houston being football country, the Houston Texans’ fan base is at the point of implosion. In their 9 year history, the Texans have been the poster child for mediocrity. The Texans have compiled a dismal record of 54-87, shutting them out of any post season appearances in their entire history. What’s hard to stomach for most Texans’ fans is the way they go about losing. If there’s a way to lose a football game, the Texans have done it, or soon will. All while Texans ownership and management praises their progress of accomplishing absolutely nothing. And with 3 games left in the 2010 season, the Texans could very well take a major step backwards.
