Here Come The Turkeys

Thanksgiving means so many things.  It used to mean football.

Unfortunately, this year, the games on Turkey Day will be dominated by Turkeys.

Green Bay plays Detroit early.  Then Oakland goes to Dallas.  Finally, the Giants play in Denver.  Was it a Presidential proclamation that said the fourth Thursday would be a day of Thanks and football had to be played in cities that start with the letter D?  Why not a new idea?  What if New England at New Orleans was on Thursday rather than Monday night?  The Colts will try to stay unbeaten in Houston, where the Texans are trying to keep playoff hopes alive.  Pittsburgh and Baltimore will be an interesting divisional match.  All 3 would be better than the 3 games that are being offered.

First, start with the first game.  Why does Detroit continue to be a Thanksgiving feature?  Tradition?  Would that be a tradition of losing?   The Lions have 2 more wins this year than last year's winless campaign, but they have not had a winning season since 2000.  They have never won a Super Bowl.  Why not take away the Lions and replace it with the current Super Bowl champ, that they would get the Kickoff Classic and the Thanksgiving game.  (This would also take care of my Pittsburgh Baltimore game from above).

Second game, Dallas vs. Oakland.  Now I have problems with the Cowboys, and their claim to be "America's team."  Or maybe it is just the fans, you know the type, they root for the Yankees and the Lakers, and the Cowboys.  Possibly they go back to the Troy Aikman days (has anyone seen him in a room with Harry Connick Jr.?) and fell in love with the Shaq and Kobe Lakers and the last Yankees dynasty.  But what about the competition?  Did the NFL schedule makers think the Raiders were going to be good this year?   Seriously?

Finally, the Broncos play the Giants.  This game would have been GREAT in mid October.  The Broncos were 6-0, the Giants were 5-0, it could have been a classic.  Before the season, there were people even in Denver who were predicting 3 wins.  With 6 wins so far, they have doubled that prediction, but maybe they have peaked for the season.

Happy Thanksgiving.  Try and enjoy some football.

I still think that we could get one good matchup out of three, and I actually liked the superbowl champ hosting one of them...

Chriso, my Eagles played the Thursday night game last Thanksgiving and I HATED it. Oh sure we had a blast tailgating all day, watching the games and cooking our own "Thanksgiving Dinner", but I'd rather have my home games on Sundays. I say let Detroit and Dallas keep the games because I don't want them.
