Hendrickson Hangs On In Norfolk
Written by Chriso, Sunday April 17 2011
The Tides started the season 1-8 and returned home for the home opener. They faced the Charlotte Knights, the same team that took four games from Norfolk to open the season. The Tides took an 8-1 lead into the seventh.
Enter Mark Hendrickson. The 6' 9" reliever is the 12th person in history to play in the NBA and MLB. He is the first since Danny Ainge gave up his career with the Blue Jays to join the Boston Celtics in their championship runs back in the 1980s. The other 10 players are from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, a time when an off season job might be selling shoes, or playing hoop instead of baseball.
Hendrickson struck out two on the way to a 1-2-3 seventh. He struggled in the eighth, sllowing two runs before another strike out and being lifted for another reliever. The Tides held on to win 8-3 for their second win of the season. And Hendrickson hangs on in Norfolk, towering over other players that are six feet tall. The left hander still has a future in baseball at 36. And an interesting history in basketball.
